Oxfordshire Baptisim Index - BEARD
« on: Monday 29 September 14 14:36 BST (UK) »
After some years, I've decided to have another look for the very elusive Caroline Lovegrove BEARD.   Caroline married William WHITE at Reading St Mary in Jan 1842, her father being shown as William (gent).

A Caroline BEARD is shown on the 1841 census in Castle Street, Reading -  one page away from William and shown as not born in county born approx. 1819 (I have assumed this to be her !).

Caroline died in 1850 so I have nothing else to go on.   With BEARD being a common surname in South Oxfordshire, I would be grateful for a lookup in the Baptism Index to see whether there is a clue - Probably clutching at straws  :-[

Hi Harry ...

The OFHS's Baptism Index is not yet available for purchase, so the only way of accessing it is via the OFHS themselves or the Oxfordshire History Centre at Cowley (and possibly a few other major public libraries etc.?).

For a very nominal sum the OFHS will do a look-up for your Caroline (go to "Search Services" on their website).

I checked their Marriage Index (1538-1837) for records of William BEARD.  There are only two marrying in Oxfordshire in the right time-frame:  1791 in Headington and 1815 in Rotherfield Peppard.  However, this index doesn't include those parishes in the north of Berkshire that were transferred to Oxfordshire in the early 1970s - they are in a separate "North Berkshire" MI, again accessible via the OFHS's website.

There is a tree on Ancestry with a Caroline Lovegrove born about 1822 Rotherfield Greys but no sources quoted so may be guesswork !

Thanks for the replies - I will take a look at the Rotherfield Greys & Rotherfield Peppard connection as I have the OFHS CD.   Failing that, I'll request a lookup from the OFHS search services.
