Look up request: Inns & Taverns of Chepstow
« on: Wednesday 01 October 14 10:20 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have access to a pamphlet published by the Chepstow Society:
Inns and taverns of Chepstow and the Lower Wye Valley, Part 5, by Ivor Waters.

It's listed in books.google.co.uk, where a search box shows a few lines that include an ancestor I've been hunting for a few years, Barnaby Gallett. He was a publican in Hereford in 1833, but this gives my first sighting of him prior to that.

Thanks

Nick

Well, I've been able to buy a copy; if anyone needs a look-up...

Ooh, Can I have a look-up. I think my ancestor George Lawrence trevor Hughes owned a pub. Can you see if he is there for me?
Thanks
Donna

Hi Donna

I'm happy to look-up, although I'm away until next weekend and won't be able to reply until then.

regards

Hi Donna

No luck with George, I'm afraid. The copy I have is Volume 5, 'Inns and Taverns of Chepstow and the Lower Wye Valley', which has inns in alphabetical order starting with P'. The index seems to cover all the volumes and there's a Luke Hughes listed, but not Joseph or Robert (see below), so it's possible George is in another volume?

The only Hughes I found in Vol. 5 is:

Joseph Hughes, Innkeeper in 1837
Rose and Crown, Thomas Street, Chepstow

Thomas Street is still there, and a quick search found some references to the Rose and Crown on the website of the Royal Commission on the ancient & historical monuments of Wales:

http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/300084/collection/ROSE+AND+CROWN,+THOMAS+STREET/?sort_typ=desc1&sort_ord=1

Welsh Journals online has an extract from Vol 1 for The George Inn, Chepstow, 1899: "in December, the licence was transferred from Robert Hughes, the owner, to Alfred Henry Powell"

http://welshjournals.llgc.org.uk/browse/viewpage/llgc-id:1337678/llgc-id:1338814/llgc-id:1338827/getText

You might find others with online searching?

Hope this helps a little!

regards
