Baptised 1818 Wistanstow?

Yes, that's the one I've got too.

I did find a Maria Painter on the 1841 census who was about the right age who was a female servant somewhere in Shropshire, but not really enough to go on to confirm she was mine.  Can't find anything likely for her in 1851 either.

1861 shows Thomas and Maria BURGAN, she b abt 1820 Wistanstow, with children in Wistanstow.

RG9/1844/102/15.

Added: They're also in Wistanstow in 1851 as BERGWIN (my reading - some transcribers may have it as BENJAMIN).  So perhaps ignore the previous 1851 finding of a Maria in service.

1851: HO107/1984/132/16.

I'm a bit hopeless with these HO107/.../.../.../ reference number thingys, BUT I did find them eventually  :-[

In 1851, Thomas and Maria have living with them ..... drum roll .... a widowed Edward Painter!   ;D

So, that ties up Maria with Thomas Burgwin (or whatever his name is).  The only fly in the ointment then is the fact that Thomas is b. 1826, which takes me back to him being only 12 when Abigail was born.

Maybe the fact that Maria was living with/married to Thomas Burgwin (sp?) when Abigail was married, prompted the "reputed father" bit.  But, if he was the father, and he and Maria went on to make a life together, I wonder why Abigail wasn't taken into the household rather than being farmed out to her grandparents and then an uncle?

Solve one problem, create another, eh?

This I would think is much the most likely scenario, and that he was not the natural father.

The couple are BURGOYNE in 1871.  He is widowed by 1881 - still BURGOYNE.
