Catharine Hay - Born Coldstream? about 1802-1806. Cant find her family.
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 07:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I have been looking for a record of the birth of Catharine to identify her family, and take our family tree up a notch.
She was married to John Moody by the 1841 census, and I found the birth & baptism of their eldest child, Francis in the non-conformist registers, Roman Catholic section in Berwick Upon Tweed. Francis was born in january 1827 and the registration shows Thrumble Hill, presumably their place of residence.
Her husband John was baptised at the Roman Catholic chapel at Haggerston Castle in Northumberland as were later children.
My problem is that Catharine shows her place of birth as Coldstream and Scotland on the 1851 and 1861 census, and Bowsden, Northumberland on the 1871 and 1881.
I am thinking she may have been born in Coldstream and they did spend many years in the Bowsden, Kyloe, Fenwick areas, very near Haggerston Castle.
Her age also varies, placing her birth between 1802 and 1806.
She was buried at Ford Cemetery, Lancashire 16th April 1881 where her age was given as 78.

I would be grateful for any help searching for Catharine's origins. Not sure where to look now.
Many thanks,
Eileen

Hello Eileen,

Between 1796 & 1816 there is just one possible birth showing on SP: Catharine Hay born 1809 in Gordon, Berwickshire, (roughly 14 miles from Coldstream.)  It’s in the Kirk register, not the Catholic.

Thank you for your help brigau.
Does the record mention parents names? And would it be possible to see on-line?
Their first child Francis is born in January 1827, so I would possibly be looking for a marriage the year before.
Is it more likely that they married in Berwick on Tweed Catholic Church, or Catherines Scottish Kirk (which I know nothing about !!).
Thank again you for looking.

Hi, you will find the birth record on family search along with many potential siblings:

Unfortunately, in her case the records don’t name the mother as is usual for Scottish BMDs, although in our family line we have eight siblings born in Coldingham 1745  - 1760 where only the father’s name was given.  It didn’t matter so much for me as I already knew who the mother was, however, by downloading images of the original OPR entry I found other useful information such as the father’s occupation, physical address of the family and names of witnesses to the baptism.  These images can be downloaded from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  You will need to buy credits before viewing them.  Kirk is just short for the Established Church of Scotland, ie Presbyterian.

If you want to take the Gordon connection further, here’s a link to the 1837 Pigot’s Directory showing James Hay, a grocer in the town.
