Samuel Lilley and Hannah Crawford of Balleymoney, Antrim
« on: Friday 03 October 14 22:23 BST (UK) »
I am looking into the family of Samuel Lilley and Hannah Crawford, who lived in Balleymoney, Antrim.  They are my wife's 2nd great grandparents.

What I do know:
Samuel Lilley was born c 1861 and died c1918.  He was married to Hannah Crawford.  After Samuel’s death, Hannah settled in Canada where here death certificate gives a birth date of March 20 1869 and a death date of Aug 6 1932. Their children settled in various places in North America, at various times between 1911 and 1929.

From their marriage record, I know that Samuel Lilley was the son of Samuel Lilley, and that Samuel Sr was deceased by the time of the marriage on Aug 10 1888.  Samuel's address was given as Drumahiskey in the marriage record.

Hannah Crawford was the daughter of George Crawford and Sarah Collins, and that George Crawford was also deceased by the time she married Samuel.  Hannah's address was listed as Bendooragh in the marriage record.

According to the 1901 and 1911 Census records, Samuel and Hannah had the following children.  For some I have identified birth dates from other records, but for others the birth dates are calculated from Census records.  The place of birth for all family members was identified as Co. Antrim in both the 1901 census and the 1911 census.

Sarah Lilley b. c1891.  By 1914, she had settled in Montana, USA
Daniel Lilley b. Feb 28 1891.  By 1911, he has settled in Canada 16
Jane Anna b. Mar 16 1894, died in 1966 in New Jersey.  Arrived in the US in 1929 with her younger brother John from Belfast aboard the “Cameronia”
George Crawford b.Aug 1898, died 1980 in Canada.  He is my wife’s great grandfather.  He was in Canada by the 1921 Canadian census
Martha, b May 1901, died Dec 1985 in New Jersey, USA
Samuel Valentine, b. July 1905, died Sept 1956 in New Jersey, USA
John Lilley, born c 1911.  Arrived in the US in 1929 with his sister Jane Anna.
Their son Daniel served with the Canadian forces in WW1.  On his attestation papers, he gave a birthplace of Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland.  He gave his next of kin as his father, Samuel Lilley, at an address of "Bendoorah, P.O.Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland".  The attestation was dated Feb 15, 1916.

What I don’t know (and what I hope someone may be able to help with)
a) When did Samuel Lilley die?
b) Is there any information available about his father, also named Samuel, who was deceased by 1888?
c) Does anyone know the name of Samuel’s mother?
d) Are there any others researching this family?

My apologies for a very long post.  I wanted to be sure and give as much information as I had.

Thank you for any assistance!

a) When did Samuel Lilley die?

Very possibly on 13 February 1918.

GRONI online has a death on that date registered in Ballymoney for a Samuel Lilly, the reported age was 57.

you can search for the death registration and view the full record, including digitised image (for £2) here:

GRONI online has the following births registered in Ballymoney for the surname Lilly/Lilley and mother's maiden name Crawford, they may relate:

- John 25 Sep 1888 (also a death registered in Ballymoney on 1 November 1888, reported age 0)
- Daniel 24 Feb 1892
- Mary 8 May 1896
- James 19 Dec 1899 (also a death registered in Ballymoney on 19 December 1899, reported age 0)
- Martha 14 May 1901
- Samuel 10 Jul 1905
- John 14 Mar 1911

Add in Sarah, Jane and George and that would fit with the '10 children born' & '8 children living' reference in the 1911 census.

BTW, Bendooragh is simply a townland in the civil parish of Ballymoney.

There's nothing at all to say that the following information relates to your Samuel Lill(e)y senior, but just to note for the meantime until you can rule it in or out:

- GRONI online has a death for Samuel Lilly 25 Jun 1880, registered Ballymoney, the reported age was 72

- Samuel Lilley (father Daniel) married Jane Ramsey (father John), 13 Aug 1857, Ballymoney 1st Presbyterian

- Griffiths Valuation has a Samuel Lilly in Bravallen - http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Griffiths Valuation also shows a Hannah Lilly & Daniel Lilly in Drumahiskey (PRONI has wills for these folk - I can't see any tie in to Samuel though) and a Jane Lilly in Bendooragh.  All the aforementioned Griffiths Valuation references have a print date of 1861.

The revaluation records show the Samuel Lilley in Drumahiskey vacating that property in 1912.

He isn’t listed subsequently in Bendoorah but that doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t living there. Plot 10a was owned by a Mrs Crawford from 1902 onwards, so perhaps he was staying with his wife’s family there. (Only heads of household are listed).

The nearest Presbyterian Church would be Drumreagh and I suspect the family would have gone there at least while living at Bendooragh. Not sure if there would be any headstone but I can take a look next time I head to Ballymoney (if it's not too wet a day). However, if they originally came from another area then Samuel Lilley, and his parents, could be buried elsewhere.

You haven't asked about the Crawfords but just in case you are interested...

*birth certificates do NOT list father's birthplace. Dunloy would be the father's (family's) residecen and this detail usually indicates the child was actually born elsewhere.

Here's a possibility for Sarah (Collins) Crawford-

"Tomlinson William of Bendooragh Ballymoney county Antrim retired mill worker died 16 November 1947 Administration Belfast 27 January [1948] to Mary Elizabeth Tomlinson the widow. Effects £381 6s. 5d."

George Crawford didn't leave a Will unfortunately- "Letters of Administration of the personal estate of George Crawford late of Bendorragh County Antrim Retired Constable R.I.C. who died 5 November 1885 at same place were granted at Belfast to Sarah Crawford of Bendorragh the Widow."

Now back to the Lilleys...

"The Will of Hannah Lilley late of Drumahiskey County Antrim Widow who died 15 January 1883 at same place was proved at Belfast [7 Jan.1884] by James Falloon of Eden in said County National School Teacher one of the Executors." Will mentions 'beloved son in law Hugh Donaghy and to my daughter Jane his wife' and grandson Alexander Donaghy.

"Probate of the Will of Daniel Lilley late of Drumahiskey County Antrim Farmer who died 20 September 1900 granted at Belfast [1 Nov.1901] to Samuel Lilley Farmer." Will leaves everything to 'beloved nephew' Samuel Lilley.
Daniel Lilley died 20 Sept.1900 age 80

Think this might also fit into the Drumahiskey family as well-

Ellen Jane Lilley (c1851 Ireland-9 Feb.1888 Greenock, Scotland), daughter of Daniel, m.(1876 Ballymoney dist.) William Thompson. Her son, Daniel Lilley Thompson, was born at Bravallen, Co. Antrim on 29 Apr.1877.
See later post. Ellen's father might be the Daniel Lilley of Bravallen who died 21 May 1884 age 81.

Wow!
Thank you all... I will digest all of this, and may be back with more questions!
