Jackson Family
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 11:08 BST (UK) »
Hello - Am helping a friend research her Jacksons, orginally Londoners who helpfully moved to St Albans. I have traced James Joseph Jackson (b. 1859 Spitalfields - deduced from other sources) and his wife Sarah Ann Hyde (b. 1867 Limehouse) and their family - Mary, James, Joseph, Sarah, Alban  Edmund and Frances in census returns.  James Joseph was "a red hot Catholic" and very eccentric. He died in 1927. I have not found Sarah's death yet. There is a family story of the estates in Ireland, refused by James, the brother who was paid to stay away from home and yet another who was crushed to death between the side of a ship and a wharf. There is also a connection with General Mac/McDonald of Boer War fame.   I could not find James" civil birth registration or baptism but am unfamiliar with Catholic records. His marriage cert. lists his father as Thomas Jackson farm labourer, deceased. This doesn't bode well for the Irish estates. Any Jacksons from this family, would like to hear from you.

His death reg puts b.c.1857/8

1901 census he was described as "paralyzed"

Is this correct James J?

Hi
Could this be the family in Whitechapel in 1861at Eassington Buildings
Bridget  Collins 60 widower rag sorter Ireland
Bridget Jackson daughter married 28 washerwoman Ireland
James 4 Spitalfields

in 1871 they are in Stepney King Edward St
Patrick McDonell 63 labourer out of employ Ireland
Bridget 46 laundress Ireland
Bridget 4   Mile End New Town
James Jackson stepson  scholar 13 same
Mary A Jackson scholar stepdaughter 7  same
Bridget Collins 66 widow such maker Ireland

The couple married June 1866 Whitechapel 1c 876 so her first husband Mr Jackson must be dead by then.I can spot 3 possible Thomas Jackson deaths in Whitechapel between 1863 and 1866.

1881 1 Samuel Crt MENT
Bridget McDonnel widow 49 laundress Ireland Cork
Bridget 14 Milliner Whitechapel
Annie 8 scholar same
Mary Ann Jackson 17 paste fitter boot maker Whitechapel
James Jackson 25 boot finisher Spitalfields

His occupation fits and so does him appearing on the 1891 census and not before.
GRO for the two Jackson children I think is
Mary Ann Jackson Whitechapel Sep 1863 either 1c 332 or 1c 356
James Joseph Jackson St Giles Mar 1856 1b 388 is the one I'd go for.
Sorry I'm not up on catholic records for London either .And I apologize for duplicating but I was typing all that out.

Thanks to Suz and Ciderdrinker. I just don't know enough but will keep the details you've found so that I can try to find a connection. James J. gave his birthplace as Spitalfields on various census returns and i shelled out for two 1859 birth  certs which turned out to be wrong. Except for the 1901 census where he was recorded as paralysed, he worked as a boot finisher. He married Sarah Ann Hyde in 1886 which is how I got his father's name of Thomas. As the family were devout Catholics, surely their son would have been baptised, but where in London is still a mystery.
Thanks for your suggestions.
