Help finding someone on 1901 and 1911 census !
« on: Sunday 05 October 14 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hiya

Just trying to do some tidying up of tricky loose ends and wondered if anyone can help find the following person for me on the 1901 and 1911 census ?

Robinson Dunn - b. 1878 North Shields who married Harriet Adella Lowry in 1901 in Tynemouth.

I have Harriet (unmarried) living with her uncle and aunt in 1901 (Eskdale) in North Shields.
In 1911 Harriet (married) is at home in Tynemouth (wife) with two children.

I cannot however find Robinson in 1901.
His marriage certificate (1901) has his address as Ropery Banks where his mother lived however he is not at that address on the 1901 census night.

I also cannot find him in 1911.
I know he died in 1915 at Morpeth county asylum. His address given by Harriet (his widow) was
22 Appleby Street, North Shields, though her residence was given as 9 Addison Street, North Shields. His cause of death was General paralysis (8 years). I cannot find Appleby Street on the 1911 census (find my past) and have trawled through the inmates in the workhouse (not sure if this is the asylum ?) but he is not there.

So, if anyone can find him that would be really helpful !!!

On another note, I see records are kept for Morpeth county asylum at the archives in Woodhorn.  As I live in NZ its not so easy to get there - so does anyone know of any records e.g. admissions registers etc being online ?

Thanks for your help !

Hi

If he was a seaman, he might be  on vessel Galatea in Medway, Kent - see RG13/740/23/6

We can't do look ups for 1911.

Thanks for looking for me.  I have seen this entry before but am not convinced it is him for the following reasons:
- don't think he had a middle name
- born north shields not Newcastle
- I haven't found any evidence that he was a sailor.  His marriage certificate (1901) states he was a fireman (though I do acknowledge this could have been on a boat), and his death (1915) that he was a former general labourer.

I guess I was hoping someone would come up with something which I felt was a better match lol ;-)

I'd think that it is fairly likely that a fireman would be on board a ship in those days. This would explain why he wasn't 'at home' on census night. Interestingly,   his brother Charles is an Engineer on the vessel T W Mould in 1901.

Given that he was on a vessel docked in Kent, the master  (b. in Lancashire) might well have put down Newcastle rather that N Shields/Tynemouth. It's not all that much of a distance - I go there regularly!

You mentioned that he was living with his mother around 1901.      Could you say what his mother's name was?

Hi doddsie4

Her name is Ann Dunn - in 1901 is at RG13/4799/39/22, a widow.

In 1891 the (very large) family are at RG12/4223/61/29

I cannot find Appleby Street on the 1911 census (find my past)

Go to the 1911 search page.

In 'Address' enter Appleby Street
In 'Registration District' enter Tynemouth.

Or for the exact address you mention above enter 22 Appleby Street to get the residents of that house.

You say he was born North Shields not Newcastle.  I often tell folk I was born Newcastle as they do not know where Morpeth is but understand if I tell them Newcastle.  Maybe he just chose the city as a lot of folk did not know where NS was.

Just a thought
