Hi all,

y Waun Araw, Dinas

Please will someone advise me if there was a street of this name in Dinas, Rhondda. I was looking at the Creed register for Lllwnypia Workhouse and this was the address given for the 'informant'. I cannot find this street on a map so it may have been demolished but would appreciate it if someone could tell me where it was.

Hi, A bit of wishful thinking here on your part but could it be Ty'n Y Waun and possibly a different Dinas?

I haven't seen the register myself but I am wondering if the address is incomplete or said in Welsh so the English translation would be different?

What year are we looking at roughly?

Ok so it's the Dinas near Porth then and not Dinas Powys? I shall go and see what I can find now.

I have found this photo on flicker, I am assuming I can share it but I am sure the MODS will correct me if I am wrong:

It shows a lot of the old areas so it might be worth looking for something similar to what is on the register in case it was spelled incorrectly at the time.

A ghost story/local fable of a yuong man called Abraham who was courting a maid at "y Collenna"

Yr oedd Abraham yn byw ger y Graigddu, Dinas. Mae y Collenna tua thair milldir oddiyno. Ar y cyfnod dan sylw yr oedd y tair milldir rhwng y ddau le yn unigedd dim ond Dinas Isaf, tua chanol y ffordd. Wel, bu cariad Abraham farw, a bu bron tori ei galon ar ei hoI. Un noson dywyll yr oedd yn myned tua chartref dros y Uethr coediog ar ochr y Graigddu i'r Cwm, a phan ar droedffordd y Waun Arw,

Abraham was living near y Graigddu, Dinas. Y Collenna is about 3 miles away. At this time these three mils between the two places were very lonely, only Dinas Isaf, about halfway. Wel, Abraham's love died and he almost broke his heart. One dark night he was heading home over the wooded slope on the side of y Graigddu to the Cwm, a when he was at the y Waun Arw crossroad...

Y Collenna is in the Tonyrefail area, and have seen reference to y Graigddu being south of Dinas (although there is a road of that name in Maerdy). this may help narrow it down...

I came across this earlier today as I am interested in Graigddu and Gwaunadda, Dinas and saw Waun Araw. This was Dinas Llantrisant, Glamorgan, obviously as you were searching the Llwynypia records.  Sorry cannot recall where I read this.

Y Waun Arw is recognisable as a Welsh place name; Y Waun Araw is not a likely candidate.
