I have finally got round to ordering the certificate for the first marriage of Major Nelson's father:

14 December 1865 at 1st Presbyterian [I think] Meetinghouse
George Nelsen, Full Age, Bachelor, Farmer
Resident at Deraghland
Father: Robert Nelsen, Farmer
and
Jane Brown, 18 years, Spinster
Resident at Drumaclan
Father: John Brown, Farmer
Witnesses: Robert Nelsen & Thomas Brown

And the death certificate for the wife:

13 August 1875 at Drumaclan
Jane Nelson, Married, Aged 26 years, Farmer's Wife
Cause of Death: Diabetes for 2 years
Informant: George Nelson of Darraghland

The ages don't quite seem to tally between the two certificates.  At least one seems to be a year or two out.

David

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

From familysearch.org, Major David Nelson's father George Nelson seems to have died in January or February 1897, aged 53 years (ie born circa 1844), with probate granted in favour of Mary A Nelson on 13 February 1897.

Hi,

I thought you may be interested in this newspaper clipping which my dad passed down to me, titled '"How David Nelson Won the V.C".

My dad wrote beside it,
"Nephew of Thomas & James Brown & cousin of Samuel J Brown,  his mother was Jane Brown, sister of Thomas & Jane".

Samuel J Brown was my grandfather who died in 1933, his father was Thomas and he had 2 brothers, James & Robert.

My grandfather was aged 5 in the 1901 Census,
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Monaghan/Monaghan_Rural/Leagh/1638288

As for his mother, Jane Browne/Nelson I haven't got her on my family tree but in the clipping it does say they live in Derryvally, near Ballybay.

Hope you find it interesting, Bev
