Thanks, Suey!

The army would be an interesting connection as her son-in-law was in the army, and thus her daughter was dragged around various parts of the UK with him!

As has been said, I just need to find a baptism for a Ruth Horton in Lewes c.1765...but none seem forthcoming from FamilySearch. I can check on Ancestry at lunchtime in the local library, but if anyone can get there first and let me know if it's worthwhile or not, that would be hugely appreciated!

I have looked on the SFHG database and not found a suitable baptism.    Nor any early records for the Spurgeon name.
The bit about St Michaels will only mean that they lived out of the parish.
There is another Spurgeon family in the area.  John and Jane.
Also marriages in Lewes for Maria in 1808 to William Death,  Mary in 1814 to William Watkins (army) and Sarah in 1816 to Michael Harding.
As far as I can see there are no baptisms in the Lewes area for them either.

Thanks! Maria is 'mine' and presumably that Mary is her sister, especially give. The army connection. Sarah I know not.

What sort of dates surround John and Jane Spurgeon?  Are they from the same generation as Henry?

John and Jane have a son, Samuel, baptised in 1811 at St Anne's in Lewes.   I just have a feeling that you need to widen your search as Spurgeon does not seem to be a Sussex name.

Chris, belated thanks for the above! Ruth's eldest daughter is named Maria/Mary. Are we suggesting that she's another illegitimate child of Mary Horton? Do your records stretch forward further than 1764?
