Looking for the parents of Joseph Bullock Needham, born circa 1835 (country ?) my gg father, died 1913 Perth WA, married Emily Annie Haggitt 1868 Christchurch NZ, Children: Mary Ethel, Hilda Maud, Percy, Charles Augustus, Frederick, Arthur Noel (my gfather), Gertrude Anne, George. Family moved to Melbourne Vic around 1880 to 1900. Charles married Maud Helen McIlroy 1901 and moved to WA. Joseph left his wife and moved to Perth 1903 where he lived with his son Charles.

No unfortunately they are not listed. Joseph was buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, Perth, WA. Doing searches to try and find any inscription or head stone records.

It's a long shot if he didn't list his parents on his marriage certificate, but get his death certificate.

But since you know where he is buried, first track down the funeral director involved and see what information they hold.

Do you have any anecdotal evidence that might suggest his country of origin, e.g. accent or dialect, mentions of cities or towns.

Do you know if he had any siblings? Knowing their origins would help you.

What was his occupation? Where did he learn a trade or job, did he go to a university, perhaps?

Any military service? Which country? If so, find his personnel file.

I note that there are several "family trees" published on the ancestry.com website.
They have varying information for Joseph Bullock NEEDHAM (d. Perth, 1913).

Several suggest his birthplace was Lincolnshire, ENG. ... and give d.o.b. as 22 June 1840.

A search of Papers Past (search phrase: joseph bullock needham) finds 11 results. He is described as a 'Gentleman' of Invercargill in 1863.

In 1869 he was discharged by the Supreme Court (at Christchurch?). Insufficient evidence on a charge of forgery. Involved him having money belonging to the Trust and Agency Company.

A second search (search phrase: j b needham) finds 146 results, including a voyage on the Jessie Nicol schooner to Fiji with his wife and two children, E.A., Mary and Maude NEEDHAM.

In 1880 he was a Land and General Agent in Auckland.

The children were born earlier than I thought, so my suggestion above might not help you.

A possible emigration record for Joseph, aboard the Genii which departed Melbourne on 12 September 1861 for Otago.

There was a Joseph NEEDHAM living in Kawarau Gorge, Otago in 1867-68 and then at Cardrona from 1872-1876. A man of that name was arrested for obscene language at Port Chalmers in 1873.

That the latter record might relate to Joseph Bullock NEEDHAM is suggested by his appearance under his full name in the publication People of Port Chalmers, page 297. I suggest that you contact the Port Chalmers Museum via their website and request more information, quoting the page number.
