1881 Census - ref  RG11  4943  98  25

John Felton, Lodger, Unm, 25, occpn. Coal miner, b. Essex
Address "Square, Collierley, Durham"

His PoB is also marked "N/K" to indicate, I think, the place/town of birth within "Essex" is not known?

Cannot find an Essex born John Felton in Durham in 1891

possibly John did a stint as a miner. I think I have found him nearer to home in 1891.

A publican at The Napier Arms Head Street Halstead with wife Amelia Josephine.

In 1901 they are in West Ham - occupation publican out of work. Both census show him as born in Little Maplestead.

A marriage in West Ham March q1888 (4a 75) between John Felton and Amelia Josephine Leggett.

The missing John's father (James) was a publican for a time at The Cock Little Maplestead which makes it quite likely it is.

I wondered if the John at the Napier Arms was the John in the '81 Census returned home. I'd found the '91 Census entry with Amelia and the 1888 marriage of Amelia Josephine Leggett. Was John's father alive in '88 and hence might be recorded on the marriage cert?

The son of John Felton of the Napiers Arms was Albert George Felton, my grandfather. They moved to Westham from Halstead. John died 20 Feb 1948, his wife Amelia died 27 Jan 1946. Albert George was borm 17 Jan 1892 and died 19 May 1963. Hope this helps.
