Hi Lilibet,

No, I haven't found his birth record - so no further on I'm afraid.

On his death record it shows his father as Charles Carolan born circa 1800 (a 'dealer in ????? Goods) and his mother as Susan, nee Marley. It was William's brother Hugh who registered William's death and he was shown as living in Glasgow. I think trying to follow up Hugh will be my next task and see if I can track him down.

If I do find out more, I'll let you  know.

Kind regards

Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks for coming back to me.  On my copy of Wiliam's death it shows the name as Carlon.  Could his father have been a dealer in 'soft' goods?  I haven't got any information on Hugh at all.

Hi Lillibet

Yes - that looks like the same one that I have. I was wondering what his father was a dealer in - I thought it was 'left goods' which made me think he was perhaps some sort of pawn broker???

I have found a Hugh Carlon on the 1851 census living with his wife Anne in Canongate Edinburgh as a victualler. On William's death certificate he is shown as living at 5 Steel Street, Glasgow. I haven't yet found him on the 1861 census, but in 1871 he is back in Burnets Close, Canongate, Edinburgh where he is living with his wife 'Catherine', six children between the ages of one and eighteen, plus a servant, and he is shown as a furniture dealer.

Are they one and the same Hugh Carlon? I have no idea until I do some more searching for the 1861 census and/or death of Anne, the wife shown on the 1851 census. I know ages can be misleading, but the 1851 census shows him as 28 and Anne 35 (!) and 47 on the 1871 census.

I feel some more detective work coming on!

But what an intriguing story?

Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks for the info on Hugh.  I will see what I can find too and let you know if I come up with anything.

Hi Andy

I have found Hugh CARLIN in the 1861 census with wife Catherine, daughters Catherine, Mary Ann, Ellen and a servant Margaret Reilly.

I haven't been able to find a death for wife Ann Carlon, but I have found a marriage of Hugh to a Cathrine Kerr, in Edinburgh on 27th September 1855.  No way of knowing if this is our Hugh's Catherine though.  Can't find a likely birth for her in Midlothian.

I'll keep digging.
