I wonder if it would be worth trying to find Michael Frances baptism, they may have moved after he was baptised?  DOB 1898???

I take it then you are working on this James being a possible brother of Martin's ?

I do have shepards from the same time frame on my extended tree and they can be super hard to trace given the nature of their work.

They were quite far down the 'farming' pecking order and never had land of their own.

Hum, still unusual how then Martin got into farming  ???

Was it ever mentioned if the farm in Portumna was a Carroll connection somehow ?

The only place to possibly get Martin Juniors baptism would be through rootsireland whom I mentioned earlier !

Could this be the John Fitzgerald that you are referring to ?

My only concern is that Michael did not give either of his first two children the Christian name of John.

Naming patterns were quite traditional at the time so IF his father was called John I would have expected this to have been the name given to either of his first two sons.

I know there were exceptions to this but it's always a good starting point !
