St Helena
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 12:07 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor James McGregor who appears on the Scottish census for 1851 and 1861 as born in 1821 in St Helena.  The 1851 indicates B Sgt behind St Helena - best guess is Barracks Sergeant, so possibly military.  Where can I source records for St Helena?
Kind Regards
Tom

Could it be abbreviated 'British Subject'? That would be more usual in the birthplace column.

Been on the familysearch.org site for ages, but can't seem to be able to navigate to any records or collections regarding Saint Helena

familysearch.org has a fairly comprehensive collection of St. Helena records.

The list is from the "Search Results for FamilySearch Catalog"  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01e2i/  they are not available online. You may be able to order the films from a LDS family history centre

In 1821 St Helena was effectively run by the East India Company. Might be worth looking at the FIBIS website www.fibis.org and also at the British Library, www.bl.uk - on the latter look for the link "Information for..." and pick Family Historians. I have researched one family based there and you'll find data scattered between the different websites.
To confuse your search further, if your man was military he might have been part of the East India Company's army, in which case his records will be at the British Library; if he was in the British Army, they'll be at Kew.

Err....FindMyPast has BMD records with images for St Helena.  I don't have time to check the dates but 1821 should be well within scope.

You can use the free India Office Family History Search to see whether your people are there.

Also, the St Helenans in my family have "British Subject" (or abbreviation thereof) appended to the birthplace on some censuses - as Bookbox has suggested.
