Nice find and as you say, geographically so close I reckon that is a good result if it fits for Roger

Hi,
I'm a descendent of the Shenington Upton family and have no proof at this moment that there's any connection between the Great Bourton and Shenington families but I know that your Edward Upton married Esther Winkless. I have the marriage in one of my notebooks and will dig it out later,I found it for someone researching your family a few years ago. I'll be in touch.

Hi Again,
I jumped in too quickly with the Esther Winkless marriage, it was Thomas Upton of Gt Bourton who married her in 1838. As previously mentioned James Upton of Great Bourton was baptised at Cropredy on 28 Apr 1799, he was the s/o Edward and Esther. James siblings baptised at Cropredy are:

16 Nov 1784 - Sarah (birthplace blank)

2 Dec 1793 - Elizabeth (all born Great Bourton)
                    John
                    Edward

What is apparent at Cropredy is that an Edward & Martha Upton had many children from 1765, one of which could be your Edward who married Esther but he must have been baptised elsewhere.

**I would seriously look at the Shenington Upton family as the male first names are very similar. What really intrigues me is that I have an Edward Upton born 1743 in Shenington but he disappears into thin air then Edward & Martha start having children in 1765 in Gt Bourton. Perhaps it's a coincidence but it definitely worth looking into.**.

This is the marriage of James parents:

Shotteswell, Warwickshire - 12 Oct 1792
Edward Upton of Great Bourton, widow and Esther Radcliffe of this parish
Wit: Richard Co....... and William Harten

This makes me think this Edward is the one previously married to Martha which is why I can't find a baptism and may be therefore the one born 1743 in Shenington.

Here is the first Edward Upton marriage:

Cropredy - 15 Oct 1759
Edward Upton of Great Bourton to Martha Hunt of Cropredy. Wit: William Hunt, Thomas Hunt

Burials in Cropredy
1762, 16 May - Martha wife of Edward, Great Bourton
1812, 19 Feb 1812 - Edward Upton of Bourton Parva
1822, 6 Dec - Esther Upton age 70, Bourton Magna

If Edward is the one from Shenington then he would have only been about 16 when he married
Martha.

Thanks for your Info Judy.
Yes the baptism of my James would tie in with his DOB 1797. I am only scratching the surface at the moment as all my research has been online so as you well know one can only go back so far on that track. My next step (when I have time) is to visit Cropedy.
I'm a bit tied up at the moment but will sit down and analyse all you're info. asap. and get back to you.
Upton is my Mothers name and they ended up in Banbury where she was born in 1913.
Thanks again and I'll be in touch.

Roger  :)

Thaks again Judy.

I am 95% sure mine aren't the Shennington Uptons. :)
