dirk tattoo

A bit out of left field here....
Can anyone tell me if any of the clans/Scots battalions or indeed any organisation in Scotland that promoted or encouraged members to have a tattoo of a dirk on the leg?

A dirk is worn by the military, a skean dhu can be worn by anyone. A dirk is worn at the waist, I wonder why there would be a tattoo of one on the leg?

Hi Lodger,

So it was a skean dhu on his leg.  This was my father in law who was something of a mystery.  Brought up in Glasgow he was intensely proud of being a Scot yet we do not think he was by birth.  I wonder if it might have been anything to do with the Glasgow Gangs of the 20's and 30's?
