The Podesta Family - Glamorgan & Monmouth
« on: Friday 31 October 14 06:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

John Podesta (Padeston) Aged 35 married Sarah Jane Foster Aged 19 3rd Feb 1854 at the Parish Church in the parish of St John Wolverhampton, Stafford. Birth used an X to sign their name. Fathers not named, both only state deceased.

Their daughter Angelina PODESTA is born 13 Feb 1855 Cardiff Glamorgan Wales

In 1871 the Family is living at 75, 74 & 73 Canal Parade, Newport
John Podesta 50 Lodging House Keeper Born: Italy Genoa
Sarah J Podesta Wife 37 Born: Suffolk Ipswich
Angelina Podesta Daughter16 Milliner Born: Mon Newport!!(not correct)
Josephine Podesta Daughter 14 Born: Mon Newport (marries Michael/Michelle ROSSI)
John F Podesta Daughter 11 Born: Mon Newport What happened to John jnr?
Ambrose Podesta Daughter 1 ¾ Born: Mon Newport  died in 1875
Charles Coyle Step Father 75 Widower Groom Born: West Ham Essex
The rest of the people are lodgers including Francis Greco, Angelina’s future husband (They took over the boarding house)

Living close by at 60 Canal Parade are Leonard 21 & Harriet Smith 22 Hawkers born: Mon Newport(not Correct)
Harriet Smith is mentioned in a newspaper article as being the sister of Josephine.

I cannot find the Podesta family in 1861.  Josephine's reg is Monmouth but John's in 1860 is Neath Glamorgan

I have found Sarah Jane & Harriet Forster in the Village of Wordsley, Kingswinford Staffordshire in 1851. Sarah is 17 and Harriet is under 1mth.

In 1861 I find a Harriet Foster living with her grandparents Charles & Margarett Smith in 64 Bridge Street Chepstow, Monmouth
Charles aged 60 is from West Ham Essex Occupation Stableman - Could he be the same Charles; John's Stepfather in 1871
Margaret 60 is from Northern Ireland - John's mum? If so, when did she die? What name?
Pretty sure Sarah's Parents are Samuel & Ethelinda Forster. Where & when did Sarah die? She left John in the 1870's according to newspaper advert taken out by John
I have the Smith Family in Newport in 1881 but can't find them after that, where'd the go
The family consists of Leonard (29 Born: Bristol) Harriet (29 Born: Stowbridge) children all born Newport
Albert 10 Louisa 8 May 4 Joseph 1

Any advice/help/opinions will be gratefully received.

Cheers
Genni

Interesting article in the Western Mail of 05/10/1869 - a James Leyson was charged with assaulting Sarah Jane Podesto. He came to her lodging house drunk & when asked to leave he "struck her a violent blow in the stomach" and tried to kick her. He was fined 15 shillings or 14 days' hard labour.

There are significant parts of the Newport,Monmouthshire 1861 census missing. It is possible the family were in one of these.

A possibility? There is a John and Annie Podesta, who both die in the first quarter 1920 in Northumberland. It might be worthwhile to use the FamilySearch residence option for the last available census year to look for them.

Roger

Thank you for your replies.

Probate records confirm John Podesta snr died in Newport Mon in May 1881. I think he's probably with Francis & Angelina Greco at the boarding house at 75 Canal Pde, only initials have been recorded in 1881 and the Greco name has been written as Gluco.

I can't find Harriet's family after 1881, do I assume they left the country?

I'll check out the John & Annie in northumberland, maybe that's Jnr.

Do you have an opinion on Charles Smith & Charles Coyle; are they possibly the same person?

Cheers
Genni

According to the Monmouthshire Merlin of 24 March 1876 Sarah Jane Podesta was believed to be in Chester (John had gone to court to stop the Newport savings bank paying £30 out to her). she appears to be back in Newport in 1883, running a market stall and accusing another stall holder of assault

John Podesta jnr is last heard of in 1882, described as an itinerant accordion player he has an altercation with a Bridget keaney, at whom he throws his instrument, and his sister Josephine Rossi
