Thomas Frederick Belcher - bapt... 1884 Harwell (s/o Frederick & Emma)
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 05:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm trying to trace the above ancester from 1901 onwards. He was the s/o Frederick Belcher & Emma (nee Froude) and was born in Harwell in 1884, Berks.

In the 1901 census (East Hagbourne)  he is aged 16 &  is living with his parents and siblings as a
Blacksmith's assistant.

In 1891 (East Hagbourne)  he is shown as Frederick T Belcher. (names reversed)

I have found a similar person in 1911 in Sth Wales who is also born about 1884 in Harwell but am not sure if this the same person as this one is shown as a motor engineer. A bit of a change from blacksmith but not impossible.

I have not been able to find a marriage for him and the only possible burial is  on 3-3-1967 (aged 83) in Henley Rd Cemetery, Caversham.

I know we can't ask for 1911 census lookups but if anyone can share some light on what happened to him from 1901,  I  would be most grateful.

This is the only marriage that I can see for him, which does tie in well with the couple you found

Jun Qtr 1909  Thomas Fredrick Belcher/ Lucie Clarovine Davies  Aberayron 11b 62

Kay

Edit - He was only a trainee blacksmith in 1901 and may well have changed his job

Hi Kay & Rosie,

Many grateful thanks for the info you have given.

They seem to have moved around a lot; Thomas born in Harwell married in Wales and died in Wokingham, whereas Lucie born in Wales, died in Reading with a home in Bristol.

Haven't been able to find any reference to Probate Calendar for Thomas.

At that time a change from blacksmith to motor engineer was not uncommon, I've heard of it on a number of occasions including for people who later set up motor car businesses of varying success. The vehicles at that time were all hand built so a decent blacksmith would certainly feel at home regarding the chassis and suspension and then its a simple progression to the engines which were pretty basic compared to ours today. A lot of the bodywork at that time was simple curved sheets of metal which the blacksmith would be familiar with plus some timberwork which the 'village' carpenter would be able to put together.

Hi artifis,

The way you put makes it a very plausible explanation.

Thank you for replying.

Thomas was the Shell manager in Malta during the second world war.  He returned to Reading after the war. Then moving to Wokingham

As far as i know Thomas married Evelyn Hayfield, maiden name unknown as she was the divoced wife of ????? hayfield.

Evelyn had a son (Henry) from the first marriage, but she and Thomas had no children

Hi IsabelR,

The Frederick Thomas Belcher in my tree is the s/o Frederick & Emma (nee Froud) born 1884 Harwell, Berks.
I know at onetime he was an apprentice blacksmith to his father in Hanney later in Hagbourne, Berks.
My searches have lead me to finding him in Wales not as a blacksmith but as a motor engineer in 1911.

I have a burial for him 3-3-1967 in Reading, Henley Road Cemetery living in Wokingham which ties in
with your info. But, I have a marriage of him to a Lucie Clarovine Davies in 1909 in Wales with a death  6-3-1959 in Battle Hospital, Reading  with an address in Bristol. I can't find where she is buried or when.

This doesn't match up with your info but could Frederick have married a 2nd time to your Evelyn?
say between 1959 & 1967?
