Is that an Australian lady you mention.. crumbs, he doesn't appear to have served in Oz from his pension record. Looking at where the 60th were stationed I would guess he could have met & married a Kent girl in Chatham, a Portuguese Senorita in Lisbon, or an Irish lass.
Looks like we are looking for a Matilda Schrivener then.

Perhaps you shouldn't have dismissed Matilda as Charles READ married a Matilda Scrivener 30th June 1834, St Michael, St Albans.

Another spelling difference.

Hi John, pre 1837 no certificate,  the marriage was by banns, the only additional info were that the witnesses were Charles Wheatley? and Ann Joiners

  Nothing there, maybe the couple were not originally from/married in Hertfordshire?
