I think you'll need to tell us a little more than that. You must know something more, otherwise you wouldn't have a reason to ask.

If she was a head of nursing in the First World War, she would presumably have to have been aged say abut 30 by the start of the war, and no more than about 60 by the end of it. So she had to have been born between about 1860 and about 1890 (I've rounded the dates to the nearest 10 years). The index at Scotland's People tells me that there were 41 C/Kath(a/e)ri/yn(e) Roys or variants born in Scotland between those dates.

Was she a member of the armed forces? Where was she head of nursing? Did she get any awards or decorations?

Why do you think she was specifically connected to Banffshire?

Right. So what you really want to know is whether this Katherine Roy could be related to you?

Have you tried an online search? I just did, and came up with
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Roy

and

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=gTJtBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA58&lpg=PA58&dq=Catherine+roy+nurse+france&source=bl&ots=e5uCzJlhIm&sig=qRr7HRfUkf9QtK15sJg_SeN-4aU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=bmBXVLG7AsHB7Aao84DYAg&ved=0CCcQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Catherine%20roy%20nurse%20france&f=false

and

John Roy, minister of Drymen, was born in Muthill, Perthshire, in 1846, son of William Roy and Margaret Gloag. He married  Margaret Ferrie in 1878 and their daughter Katherine was born in 1883.

Think Catherine was born 1883 Drymen Stirling not Drymen Dumbarton.

Tha parish of Drymen is in Stirlingshire, bounded on the south and west by Dunbartonshire.

cant find place of birth or date

You haven't read the messages above!

You can get her birth certificate by going to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and investing in a few credits. Use one credit to find and five to download the certificate. It will confirm that she was born in the parish of Drymen, probably in the Manse, on 24 January 1883, and that her parents Reverend John Roy and Margaret Ferrie were married on 2 July 1878, probably in the parish of Campsie.

You can then use six more credits to find and download the marriage certificate. This will confirm that the Reverend John Roy was minister of Drymen, aged about 31, parents William Roy and Margaret Gloag, and his wife was aged about 23, parents James Ferrie and Margaret Anderson.

I take it that the James Roy born in 1873 in Banff is the one whose mother was Ann Roy?

In the 1881 census he is at 4 Brae Heads, Banff, described as great-nephew of Margaret McLagan. In the same household are her sister-in-law Jane Roy, 53, seaman's widow, niece Maggie Roy and nephew William Roy.

This looks like the family of John Roy and Jane Andrew, who were married in Banff on 21 December 1851: William b 1861 and Margaret b 1864. They also had a daughter Ann b 1852. I don't have free access to the 1861 census so am unable to check that to see John's age and birthplace.

Nor can I access the 1851 census for Muthill to see where and when William Roy, father of the Rev John Roy of Drymen, was born.
