Joseph Henry Rolison-spelt several different ways!
« on: Monday 03 November 14 16:43 GMT (UK) »
I have tried once before to get a birth date/certificate for the above born approx. 1872 in Winkfield on this site. He was the brother of my grandfather, and I have a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate, born in 1874. On all the census forms Joseph is listed as born in Winkfield, as indeed was my grandfather, so why is there no record of Joseph's birth or baptism anywhere? My grandfather's BC says Registration Easthampstead  -Sub District Bracknell, although on the census they are all listed as Winkfield. Any help/ideas greatfully received.
regards.

You don't give your grandfather's name, but presumably he was Thomas Charles Rolison, birth reg Jun qtr 1874 Easthampstead?  It's the correct district for Winkfield - see www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/easthampstead.html.

I expect Rolison is prone to mistranscription, so it may be worth investigating this registration.

Joseph ROBINSON, Dec qtr 1871 Easthampstead 2c 391

However, this may be another Joseph Robinson who turns up later in Lancs with a Binfield, Berks birthplace.

That does look like a possible for Joseph, so thanks for that. I have got the surname spelt in 28 different ways, which is a real problem. My grandfather Thomas Charles Rolison was OK and I have his birth certificate, however both Joseph and his older brother William- who was 8 months old on the 1871 census still elude me at the moment. They were all born in Winkfield, and there were five siblings in all living at Winkfield Place estate where their father Charles was a gamekeeper.
