School Rows, On High Road to Longridge help please
« on: Tuesday 04 November 14 17:41 GMT (UK) »
I have an 1861 Census for James Yeardly and family.   The address is given as School Rows, On High Road to Longridge, Whitburn, Linlithgowshire.  I know the area but do not know where this might have been.  I am wondering is it on the way to Longridge from Breich Crossroads?

Any information appreciated. Thanks

The census lists School Rows as in the hamlet of Croftburn, so could School Rows be on the road from Fauldhouse?

Yes they are shown on the 1897 - 1898 map on the Old Maps site by a church in Fauldhouse  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Edit - School Row is mentioned on this site under Crofthead http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/403.html

If you are looking for old maps for Scotland (and some for England and Wales) the best place to look is the National Library for Scotland. You can see School rows on the OS six inch 1892-1905 at http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.82797&lon=-3.70403&layers=6. By changing the map on the left hand side to the OS six inch 1843-1892 you can get a picture of what it would have looked like in 1861 although they are shown as Fauldhouse Rows. There is the more detailed 25 inch map available at http://maps.nls.uk/view/74963456.
