Joseph ELLIS, blacksmith and wheelwright of Port Adelaide
« on: Tuesday 04 November 14 21:26 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the ancestry of Joseph ELLIS. He ;
died 4 Dec 1902, New Parkside, South Australia
married 15 Oct 1857 Maria Rachel MACHON
was born about 1834 (died aged 68) or about 1829 (married aged 28)
was the son of Joseph ELLIS (as per marriage index)
was a blacksmith & wheelwright of Port Adelaide (not to be confused with the Joseph ELLIS of Magill)
was buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery

A Passenger List that got my attention is of the schooner “New Perseverance“, from Fremantle, Western Australia, arriving Adelaide 4 Mar 1857. There was a Joseph ELLIS as a passenger. I don’t know if he is my Joseph ELLIS.

I have details of his descendants and the ancestry of his wife, Maria Rachel MACHON. It is a lead on his ancestry that I hunger for. Can anyone help me, please.

Regards
Grantley

Do you have either Josephs marriage certificate or his death certificate? His Marriage should show when and from where he came and maybe his parents names. His DC if correct may have similar.

Thank you Gerry & Neil,

I didn’t have the Almanac details.

I don’t have either the Marriage or Death Certificate for Joseph ELLIS.

The marriage index says that he was the son of Joseph ELLIS.

He died in 1902 and I was of the belief that “place of Birth” was not recorded on the South Australian Death Certificates until 1908. I hope that I am wrong.

Similarly I didn’t think they appeared on Marriage Certificates until 1908.

You won't get any information from SA certificates except the bare minimum details. Have you checked for a newspaper obituary? Often there was a lot of information in obituaries of old colonists. An obituary may also give his length of time in the colony.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Is it possible that Joseph's father is named Thomas? The only possibility that I can see that fits with his occupation is Joseph born 1831 to Thomas (a farmer of 14 acres), he is in the 1851 census as an apprentice wheelwright in Far Hall, Heswell, Cheshire. Siblings are Samuel, Elizabeth, Emanuel and Jane? Are any of those names familiar in his family? There are many Joseph son of Joseph options, none where father or son is a blacksmith or wheelwright.

OP has mentioned his father was Joseph as per the index.

Marriage
ELLIS Joseph  28 years  Status not recorded  Father Joseph ELLIS
MACHON Maria
15 Oct 1857  24 years  Status not recorded  Father William MACHON
At the Wesleyan Chapel Adelaide  Ade 32/394

There are a couple of Joseph ELLIS's arriving on coastal vessels from Western Australia but not way of identifying if either of them is your man.

It is possible he may have arrived in another Colony before settling in SA.

Only a possibility at this stage?
A family in Albron Place Doncaster West Riding Yorkshire.
Joseph Ellis 55, b1786 occ Bailiff, Wife Mary 37, b1804, Daug Mary 15, b1826, Daug Eliza 11, b1830,
Son Thomas 9, b1832, Son Joseph 7, b1834, Son John 2, b1839.

I will try and find them in a later census to see is still there and any further lead on occupations.
