Meiklemean/Micklemeen Family.
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 13:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out a bit more about my Meiklemean family (also transcribed as Micklemeal,Micklemean,Micklemeen). They seem to lived in the Kirkcudbright parish in Scotland. I have gone back to an Ann (sometimes recorded as Agnes) Micklemeen who married a James Black on 21/12/1765. Possibly the surname has been mis-transcribed & should be Meiklevenie,a surname which also crops up in Kirkcudbright???

Any thoughts?

Regards

Coreen

Black's "Surnames of Scotland" gives "Meikleman" as a heading, then mentions examples from documents: John Meiklemean in Drumoir 1677; Andrew Meiklemean in Gill of Newlaw, Kirkcudbright 1749; Andrew Miklemein and John Miklemen in Grange, Kirkcudbright 1689.

HI

I've checked the Monumental Inscriptions for Kirkcudbright  Churchyard but no one there.  There are Meickles, Mickles and Means but no Meiclmein/alts.

Will have a look at some other parishes.

Hi,

Thanks for responses. A few possibilities there - especially Andrew Meiklemein in Gill of Newlaw. My Ann Micklemeen married in 1765 so could have been born around the same time as Andrew.

Hi Coreen

What were Ann and James Black's children's names?

Black's source for Andrew in Newlaw was "The commissariot record of Kirkcudbright. Executory papers 1663-1800", Edinburgh, 1903.

It might be worth having a look on ScotlandsPeople to see if there are any wills.

I had a look very early on  but found nothing for them in Kirkcudbright.  Also checked the Old Kirkcudbright website. Not checked all my local sources yet - I have far too many  ;D

I've been looking at the marriage entry. I'm sure it says that proclamation was at Kirkpatrick (assume K. Durham) for both of them. will put it up for others to see.
