16th Battalin Lancashire Fusiliers help
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 17:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to search a relative who was killed in WW1.  His name was Arthur Salmon 57325  He was killed in July 1918.  I am trying to find out more about his service history, where he enlisted and what battles he fought in.

I would be grateful for any help

Dear Jim:

If I can crash this request please! I have Frederick George Cosham living in Dover enlisted 1914 at Dover with the 16th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

Do you know where Cosham would have signed up for service in Dover?

Thx

Info so far is that he attested into the ASC as part of Kitchener's New Army. In this case K4.
You can determine this from his 1st. (overseas) no. S4/122921=a service Coy. in K4 which was formed in Nov. 1914.
16/L.F. was also formed in Nov. 1914 as part of K4 & was assigned to the 32nd. Div.
It's possible he was attached to this Div. while in the ASC but impossible to say for sure.
As his service record was one of those destroyed during the Blitz it can't be said when he transferred to 16/Batt. L.F.
Town Halls were the usual place of recruitment.

Thx Jim1

So perhaps he didn't intend to, but my man signed up. He was about 23 years old, so what would happen next?  As an example how soon would he be moved for training etc..

After his preliminary medical & signing on the dotted line he would have been given a date & place to start his training usually a couple of days away. He would have reported to the ASC Training Depot (Supply) where he would have undertaken 3 months training & a further medical. He would also have been allocated his service number.
He then would have been posted to a Divisional Train. This was the supply route from the docks to the Divisions in the field.
If he was F.G.Cosham Baker & pastry cook this will tell you what he was probably doing in the ASC.
I'm pretty sure he never thought he'd end up fighting in the trenches.
As to intending to sign up, he certainly did intend to as at this time the Army was made up of volunteers.
