RootsIreland - very disappointed!
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Just logged onto RootsIreland and found a marriage that I would like to purchase only to find out that I have to pay a minimal £20!!!!!  I only use that site once or twice a month and it's just not economical to pay this for one or two records....

Anyone else cheesed off?

Annie

There's a thread on the new subscription system:

If you access many records, it's a bargain, if you only access a couple, it's exorbitant.

Even though I'm someone who routinely fits into the former category, I feel it wrong that you and others will either be put off by the cost or pay the dosh and effectively subsidise me, it's simply not fair.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=670189.0 is worth reading about who put them together etc, you can then make your own mind up on how reliable the records are!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I think with all sites using transcriptions there is alway room for error.  The process is very boring for someone with no interest in genealogy and mistakes will be made, you just need to look at the market leader's transcription of the Scottish census, it's ridiculous......I did pay the £20 but suspect some of the records are wrong but apart from going to Dublin  for the originals or the local church it's the only option but you'll never know if your research is sound.  I don't like the fact that they never cite their sources either!!!

there are a lot of records on familysearch BUT you have to keep your searches "loose".. for example, someone couldn't find their kin in Monaghan, insisted they weren't there, but they were, under Carrickmacross, Ireland which is in Monaghan!!

So, searching for someone in Donegal it's better just to put in Ireland, Name(s) and Date range, then look at results.

If you have the details of the marriage, then you would probably be better off simply buying a photocopy of the full cert from GRO Roscommon for €4.

It's from 1874 and they said they didn't have it as it wasn't in their date range..

All marriages from 1864 onwards should be registered.
