Butler in Bromsgrove
« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 19:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I just need a second opinion on who Mary Butler b. abt 1773 in Bromsgrove.
She married William Spittle and lived in Wolverhampton, Staffs.
According to the 1851 census (which is usually more trustworthy than 1841) she was born in 1773 in Bromsgrove, Worcs.
She and William had five children to my knowledge, Mary b. 1811, Sarah b.1805, Joseph b.1808, William b. 1814 and another Joseph b. 1816. If anyone could fill in the gaps with more children (they married about 1800) that would also be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pendlelad

They married in December 1800 in St Martin, Birmingham  [Ancestry transcribe the date as 28 Dec 1800, but I cannot see that information on the image. Nothing more that names of the couples]

It looks like Joseph b 1816 is not their child -as Joseph b.c. 1808 is living with Wiilliam & Mary in 1851??

A child is only usually given the name of a sibling if the sibling died????

Hi,

Have a look at FreeREG http://www.freereg.org.uk/  Don't enter a first name and just search on the county.  Cross-check with FamilySearch - they usually agree.

There is a Mary but she wasn't baptised until 1778.  But that doesn't exclude her.

How did she turn up in Wolverhampton?  Did she go alone as a young woman or with her parents?  Look for the burial of her parents.  Try the NBI.

Hi

I would not put too much emphasise, on the birth years on the census

The majority of people, in those time's only had a general idea when they were born, and this could be out by a few years

If Mary was born in 1773 she would have been 27 when she married, a bit old for those time, but not unheard of, unless she was a widow?

It is more likely, that the Baptist record for Mary, that Mike has found for 1778, may be your Mary and would give more credence to the birth of Jane b 1824

Family History is a Pandora's box if you don't like what you see find a new hobby, only concentrate on the proven facts and not the facts you think you know.

Thanks for your help you two, i did think marrying at the age of 27 was a bit old in those days. She was a spinster when she married in 1800 according to the image. Both William and Mary could write, so they must have had some education too. There are two baptisms in Bromsgrove. One in 1772 with Gilbert and Mary as parents and the other, as Mike said in 1778 with Samuel and Elizabeth ad parents.
