Thomas Riches and Ann Wright of Worlingworth
« on: Friday 14 November 14 23:38 GMT (UK) »
My ggg grandfather was Thomas Riches (b 1782) from Worlingworth who married Ann Wright. I am at a standstill trying to find details of their parents. Any suggestions?

In answer to Rosie's question
31 October 1797  Thomas Riches Widower of Worlingworth married Ann Wright at Framlingham St Michael.

31 July 1784  Thomas Riches married Sarah Anderson Worlingworth.

31 July 1793 Sarah Riches wife of Thomas, carpenter, buried Worlingworth.

Thomas' burial 23 March 1845 Worlingworth records him as being 84 years old so born c1761.

I have found a Thomas Riches bpt 11 Dec 1763 in Burgate (Hartismere Deanery), which is some distance west of Worlingworth, but not a million miles away.  Parents Thomas & Susannah RICHES.  Susannah was Susannah THURLOW of Burgate she  married Thomas 11 Apr 1756 at Wortham.

There is also the bpt of a Thomas RICHES 17 June 1756 Finningham Parents Margaret & Samuel.

Do any of these parents names crop up in your Thomas' family?  Can you tell us the names of Thomas' children??  Sometimes helps to link it to a previous generation.

In addition there are these to consider

Bpt  2 Mar 1761 Thomas RICHES son of Susanna, Grundisburgh  (familysearch.org)

Also this marriage
12 August 1756 William RICHES married Sarah BERRY, Athelington which is very close to Worlingworth.   Perhaps someone could check PRs for you to see if they baptised any children (inc a Thomas) in that Parish.

Thanks for the replies.
I have been mistaken thinking that Thomas' birth was in 1782 rather than about 1761. Thomas' children (presumably with his 2nd wife Ann Wright) were Charles (1798), Nathaniel (1799), Emily (1801), Sarah Ann (1803), Thomas (my gg grandfather 1805), Hurren (1807), James (1809), Jesse (1811), Anderson (named after his 1st wife? 1814), William (1815) and Samuel (1817).
Could Thomas' parents be John Riches (b 1727 Hoxne) & Elizabeth Heron (b 1730)?

They could quite easily be John & Elizabeth of Hoxne but I would have expected those names to be reflected in his childrens names - esp as he used Anderson for one.  He does feature a William & a Sarah Ann.  Only thing I can suggest is to post a look up request for Athelington & Hoxne with details of both couples & see if SKS can oblige & check the PRs for those parishes at the Suffolk Record Office.

ps.  Hurren is an unusual Christian name but it is a surname that features in that area - could be that has a relevance also.
pps.  Just realised HERON could also be HURREN his mothers maiden name.

Last time I looked around Worlingworth church, some researcher had compiled a survey of the memorial stones in the cemetery there.  It was open for inspection, depending on whether the church door was locked or not.

You could always check with the Local History Society in Worlingworth, I know that having produced an excellent WWI book this year, they are now researching the Victorian folk in the village, which is of course after your search. More on http://www.wlhg.org/

There is also a very diligent Local History Recorder in the village.

Also, Simon often notes when a church is permanently open for visitors, and having been to a recent wedding in the village, I know they have a new Rector who may well be keen on leaving the church open. If not, there should be a note on the notice board directing you to the nearest keyholder. YOu can check on Simon's website at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk
