Hamilton's in County Monaghan Ireland
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 19:47 GMT (UK) »
Greetings, I am researching my paternal great grandfather, James Hamilton, who owned a farm in Ballybay, county Monaghan, Ireland in the early 1900's. Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to rootschat ;D

Just had a quick look on 1901 census, the only one I could see living in Ballybay was born in Armagh and a minister http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001139315/

same guy same area, same profession in the 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003107213/

But you need to check out the census yourself as there are very few James Hamiltons living in Monaghan
Leicestershire:Chamberlain, Dakin, Wilkinson, Moss, Cook, Welland, Dobson, Roper,Palfreman, Squires, Hames, Goddard, Topliss, Twells,Bacon.
Northamps:Sykes, Harris, Rice,Knowles.
Rutland:Clements, Dalby, Osbourne, Durance, Smith,Christian, Royce, Richardson,Oakham, Dewey,Newbold,Cox,Chamberlaine,Brow, Cooper, Bloodworth,Clarke
Durham/Yorks:Woodend, Watson,Parker, Dowser

Thank you so much. I believe that James Hamilton Sr., my great great grandfather may have been born in Scotland. His son, James Hamilton Jr would have been born in county Monaghan in the 1870's. I have traced and met descendants of Hamilton's who still live in or near Ballybay. They told me the family belonged to St. Mary's Church at Carakatee. I have seen the family burial plot there and the nearby farm they worked.I have however no documentation to give dates. My Great Grandmothers name was Mary McCudden or McCuddon. That's about all I know right now.

James Hamilton married Mary McCudden in the RC parish of Aughnamullen East (Lough Egish) in 1870. FamilySearch has some children.

Is this a possibility, does the townland of Carrickaveilty ring a bell?

I cannot thank you enough for giving me this valuable information. You have done in less than 24 hours what I have searched for now over a year. Bravo for you! Both of your information I think correctly applies to my ancestors. I now know my great great uncle and aunts and birth dates. I know that the surname Lennon appeared in the Hamilton line and sure enough it is in the census information. Thank you again I sure do appreciate your help.

No problem, here is the family in 1911, but Alice appears as "niece":

I believe that one of the Hamilton girls married a Lennon. Alice would have been Mary's granddaughter. The Lennon's ended up emigrating to the US. I wonder why Alice was living with her Grandmother in 1911? Probably an interesting story there.  Thanks again.
