Hopeman Addresses
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone advise where I could find out who lived at a certain address before 1861.  The address is 42 Forsyth Street, Duffus.  I've checked the 1851 census for the address but there is no record of that address.   Any advice would be very much appreciated.

 ;)

Hi ,

The Grant family are living at 1 Forsyth Street in 1861 , in 1851 their address is Village of Hopeman.
Village of Hopeman gives 230 results in 1851.

I knew about the census showing Village of Hopeman but wandered if there was anywhere else that I could find out what the previous address would have been before numbering started,

Valuation rolls began in 1855, so might be used to narrow it down - it does depend on how the village was numbered / addressed, however.  I've seen ones where it's just '1 Hopeman', '2 Hopeman', for example before streets were properly named and numbered so it can be tricky establishing exactly where a property was.

The National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh have a full set, and the Local History Centre in Elgin might also be able to help as well.

Hi
We are currently developing a site called Hopeman History where there is information on the village including some on the original estates register dating back to 1805. Unfortunately it appears that this document has been lost and what we have are some notes taken many years ago.  All streets were named from the outset although some have changed. All houses also had a number however many are only known by their name including a few on Forsyth Street but these can still be identified.
