War Memorial at Shaftesbury Grammar School
« on: Sunday 16 November 14 14:39 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone will be able to help me obtain an image of a war memorial.

A Western Gazette article in 1950 details "the unveiling and dedication of the War Memorial at the school for those Old Boys of Shaftesbury Grammar School who gave their lives in the Second World War" and that the memorial is "opposite the tablet which commemorates the Old Boys who lost their lives in the First World War."

It is the table commemorating the First World War that I am interested in because it contains the name of Philip Fred Cole, one of the casualties I am researching.

I've sent messages via the "contact us" facility on www.shastonian.org/ - a website for students and staff of the former Grammar School, but have received no response.

Any ideas?

You could try contacting the Dorset Echo which is running a commemoration of WW1:

website: http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/ww1/
e-mail: newsdesk@dorsetecho.co.uk
postal address: Dorset Echo, Fleet House, Hampshire Road, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 9XD.

Good luck
Philip

Thanks Philip, I've just done that!  Hoping someone reading the board will have an image.  You never know.

Just a thought - is the current Shaftesbury School the successor to the Grammar School? If so they may well have inherited the War Memorial tablet, and it may be on display, even if they've moved to a new site or new buildings. Worth an email or a phone call to their office?

Graham, I have no idea!  Didn't get anywhere with the Dorset Echo, they replied very promptly but have nothing in their archives - they said they don't really cover the Shaftesbury area.  No problem, I will not give up.  Will try Shaftesbury School next.
Thanks.

Success!  Shaftesbury school is the old Grammar School, and they have kindly offered to photograph the memorial and send me a copy later in the week.  Result!

Nanny Jan - thanks for reminding me about the Blackmore Vale publication - I had forgotten that one.

Many thanks for everyone's help.
