I have been trying without success to find details of the death notification of Jean Piggot (nee Mason) who was married to James Piggot and died I believe in 1847/1848 in Forfar but cannot find anything. Can anyone help?

Hi and welcome have you tried the Old Parish Records on www.scotlandspeople .gov ..You could also try deceased on line for a burial ...Also maybe there might have been a notice in the papers  :)

SP has just 1 in Angus:
Jean Piggot Bur. 27/4/1841 Arbroath which about 15 mls. from Forfar.
Have you tried variances of her first name as Jean, Jane, Joan & Janet were often interchanged.

Try e-mailing Angus Archives and asking if they can help. There is a book of burials in Forfar which was not held by the cemeteries department - I remember seeing the original book in the town offices at The Cross many ages ago. It was transcribed and there is a copy of this typed transcription in Forfar Library. There is a slim chance that this found its way to the archives rather than going to the cemeteries department, and if so it would not be on Deceased Online.

In fact Deceased Online's coverage of Angus has some curious deficiencies - I have a photograph of at least one grave in Newmonthill whose occupants (or at any rate those named on the stone) are not listed on DO, even though their death certificates say they died in Forfar.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
