If he died from 1855 onwards then his parents names and mothers maiden name will be shown on his death cert.  Same info is found on any marriage cert from 1855 onwards

Hi Bonzo

Where did James marry? Where is the reference to Duns from as a birth parish for him?

There are a number Darling families in Berwickshire. Also a few James Darlings in the right sort of age group. Thinking you might need to at least confirm some detail for him to ensure you are following through on the right line.

Assuming he was still in Scotland for 1841, there is this entry for example:

John Darling 40 agril lab.
Elizabeth Darling 40
John Darling 15
James Darling 14
Thomas Darling 11
Address: Kidshiel Haugh, Duns

Could it be this entry for example for the family above https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTBC-PZQ

Just guesses really until we have something to be definitive about...

Monica  :)

Added: might have to scratch through that family group if this info is correct and been verified https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MW47-BXV

Bonzo, not sure if this is your family tree here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/74158986/person/42289635900

Some census entries also show here:

1861 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7KH-RW8
1871 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V51F-6NR
1881 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQZM-BG6

Have not been able to find the marriage on www.freebmd.org.uk Doesn't help in respect of trying to at least confirm his father's name  :-\

Also, haven't yet seen on these census entries the ref to Duns or Berwickshire...but sure you must have one  ;)

Hi Monica.

I believe the family you have shown on the 1841 census is the correct one and also the 1861 census on Holy Island with James and family, I have him on all census with 1901 the last one.

the reason I believe this is correct another James Darling born around the same time in Duns
parents George & Elizabeth on the 1841 census are still with parents in Scotland on the 1851
 census.

A James Darling single born Duns is on the 1851 census for Holy Island.

Hi

The 1881 entry above shows him b Holy Island Northumberland but the 1861/1871 shows Scotland.

Can you confirm that those entries are the James Darling you are researching?

What was Margaret's maiden name?  If you don't know - a copy of one of the children's birth certs will give that info

Births December qtr 1852
Mary Ann Darling   Berwick    10b   247

Births March qtr 1855
Margaret Darling      Berwick    10b   272

Births December qtr 1856
Thomas Darling  Berwick    10b   268

Births June qtr 1859
Jane Darling  Berwick    10b   295

No obvious marriage in Northumberland so it may have been in Scotland but you will need Margaret's maiden name to confirm that

The only James Darling anywhere near his birthyear died 1907 Newcastle but his birthyear was 1835 - not 1829/30

That birthyear matches the 1901 entry where he is again just shown as b Scotland

1891 shows birthyear as 1831 and again - just Scotland so where did you get his birthplace as Duns from?
