Kathleen Autherson - Died on a Cruise Ship.
« on: Tuesday 18 November 14 13:08 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help locating death details for my Grandmother

Kathleen Autherson b: 1905 Pocklington, East Yorkshire.

Parents: Richard Autherson b; 1860 and Lydia Watson b: 1868

1st marriage to Gerard Robinson b: 1903 Newcastle upon Tyne, married in Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding 1928. They had 3 sons.

2nd marriage to Harry Tizick b: October 1908 in Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, married in Hull, Yorkshire East Riding 1939. They had 2 sons.

I think she died in July between 1968-1970 ? I know it happened on a cruise ship when it was anchored off the Rock of Gibraltar and permission was granted for a burial at sea. I know a memorial service was held in Grimsby after her husband came home. I was young but I have this nagging thought in my head that no women were there because her husband was Jewish, I could have this totally wrong but it's there in my head so I thought I would share.

I would be so happy if I could find out the details eg: the name of the ship, and the exact date she died and the burial date. Also anything about the memorial service.

Thanks, Jean

Hi Jean

There is an entry in the GRO British Nationals died overseas index

1970

Kathleen Tizick, aged 64, Registration Post 'Shipping', Volume 'S' Page '30'

You can obtain a copy of her death certificate from www.gro.gov.uk for £9.25 by ordering an overseas death certificate with the reference I quoted but that won't give you all the information you are looking for. However, it should give you the name of the ship and from there I assume you could contact the shipping line and ask for their help.

Hi,

It might be worth contacting synagogues in Grimsby to ask if they have any records of a memorial service. There seems to be just the one:

I was on a cruise ship, SS Canberra in 1981 on the first two (Madeira  and Port Everglades, Florida) legs of the World Cruise. We disembarked at Port Everglades myself as an immigrant and my wife as a US Citizen. One day during the cruise another passenger asked us if we had heard the ship's engines turned off in the middle of the night. We had not! An elderly passenger had died and was buried at sea which includes the turning off the engines as the coffin is lowered down into the sea. The most elderly passengers had to sign a waiver to allow for this. Kathleen would have been too young to have signed.

Thanks for the info, nanny Jan and barryd.

Barryd, Well I know she was buried at sea at her husbands request. I don't know what he had to do to make it happen but it did happen.

Kind regards,

jean :-)
