When and where did they marry?
I'm not immediately seeing the marriage in the England and Wales Index.
Nor any birth for a Susan Irene Oliver.

Did your mum have any older siblings?

Whereabouts in Essex was Susan born? Approx when?

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

There is a Walter Albert Adams who served as a seaman WW1. born 20 July 1894 in Birkenhead Cheshire, his occupation - Baker.
His parents are Alfred and Fanny Adams, living in Leeds as of 1911. Alfred is a crumpet and muffin maker.
If this is your family he married a Susan Jacoba Oliver 28 March 1920 in Leeds at St George Church. Both were of the parish.

Thank you for the information. Thank you for helping my search. It does seem to be the missing link that I have been hoping for. Seems that my previous information was not quite accurate concerning Susan's second name. How do I find the documentation? They seem to have come to South Africa soon after being married, as my mother was born in Kimberley in 1921. Kind regards. Raine

Looked at the image on ancestry, the banns were read 14,21,28 March 1920.
There is no marriage recorded beneath the banns, and across the entry is written banns run out.
If you do a search via computer- South African ancestry, there are a number of web sites with passenger lists. Then you can determine if they went as a married couple or married after they got to South Africa.
