William John Linney
« on: Saturday 22 November 14 13:20 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the spouse of William John Linney. He was born in 1858 in Leighton Buzzard son of John Linney and Elizabeth (Eliza) Hickinbottom. I have found three  marriages which could be his one to Ann Odell in Luton in 1876 , also June 1881 Mary Linney and another to Mary Chamberlain in 1889 in Leighton Buzzard. Could anyone help me.

Hi
Not sure about Ann Odell , he is shown as 21 bachelor son of John  and she born 1849 but in 1891 William is with a wife Mary born 1867 Leighton Buzzard.
Her date and place of birth matches with a Mary Chamberlain d of Thomas and Mary on the 1881 census but not with a Mary Linney so I would go for the 1889 Chamberlain marriage .
Just a suggestion

For a definitive answer you'll have to invest £9-25 in a certificate

I though Mary Chamberlain but I found a family tree on www.werelate .org which showed his wife as Ann Odell which made me question my research

Hello

As the author of the WeRelate page mentioned above (full link: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:William_Linney_%281%29 ) I spent some time disentangling the various William Linneys. Off the top of my head I seem to remember there were at least two William Linneys of similar ages from Leighton Buzzard (where it is a fairly common name) and another who lived in the Luton district (possibly at Totternhoe) for a time. The William son of John Linney and Eliza Hickinbottom I'm pretty sure was the one who married in 1876 in Luton, and have transcribed on WeRelate his marriage entry from the parish records (same detail as a marriage certificate - free from Luton Library, so rather better than £9.25 from GRO). This confirms his father's name. The William and Mary Linney living in Leighton Buzzard in 1891 are a different couple - the William you are looking for was with his wife Ann in Hampstead but as "Lenney" - you can tell it's the same couple from the son Arthur (actually a stepson) who appears in both the 1881 and 1891 census with the couple.

Hope that helps.

Thanks
Richard.

Thanks Richard  it is always difficult when there are 2 people with the same name and born around the same year. It takes people like you to keep the record straight and I will alter my tree to the correct spouse.
Many Thanks
