I happened to chance on a number of sites which list and/or details patents taken out by a relative.
The sites are very informative and can provide extra information for your genealogy. The overarching search engine seems to be Google Patents. So type in "Google patents" in the Google search box followed by a name. Some patents are duplicated in Europe and US sites.
I learned that my relative lodged 21 patents in the 1920s for clutches, gears and transmissions, complete with complicated diagrams. Up until now I thought his occupation was to manage the family ironmongers business in Guildford, Surrey.
