Graham & Rowel Families, Whitby, Parish Record Info Needed
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 22:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to sort out & find any information about my Graham/Grayham & Rowel ancestors in Whitby & am hoping that my fellow Rootschatters may be able to assist!

William Graham born c1750 (possibly baptised 14th Jan 1749 to father James in Whitby), married Jane Rowel also born c1750 on 25th November 1775 in Whitby. For Jane I have been able to find absolutely nothing regarding her baptism/birth.

William & Jane (my 5x gt grandparents) had 8 children that I have found, all born/baptised in Whitby they being:

William Graham    born 8th Nov 1778    chr 13th Dec 1778    died by 1794
James Graham     born 25th May 1781  chr 25th May 1781    died by 1786
Jane Graham/Grayham    born 21st Aug 1784    chr 12 Sept 1784
James Graham/Grayham  born 28th Oct 1786    chr 19th Nov 1786
John Graham       born 19th July 1789  chr 24th July 1796
Margaret Graham  born 11th Sept 1791 chr 24th July 1796
William Graham    born 19th April 1794 chr 24th July 1796
Martha Graham    born 30th June 1796 chr 24th July 1796   died 1873

Martha (my 4x gt grandmother married Thomas Parker in 1821 in Bedlington, Northumberland. This line I know all about. Her siblings apart from the two who died young, I know nothing about re marriages & deaths.

Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi David,
Just had a quick look at my records for Whitby 1600 to 1838. This is what I have found so far.
There is a Joseph Graham (Sailor) who had a daughter Susannah Graham Bap 29/05/1749
A James Graham (Taylor) who had a son James Graham Bap 31/03/1751
A Jacob Graham had a daughter Jane Graham Bap at 15 weeks old on 03/10/1753
Your William Graham son of James Graham (Sailor) Bap 14/01/1750. William Married a Jane Rowel on 25/11/1775. in St Mary the Virgin in Whitby. Possible match for Jane Rowel is Alnwick, Northumberland, born 29/12/1754, Father Thomas Rowel. Hope this helps but please let me know if you need any further help.
Kind Regards

Hi Mike,

Many thanks for your reply & the info, very much appreciated.

In the almost 3 and a half years since I started this thread I have made a little progress, particularly when the scanned/digitized Yorkshire parish records (including Whitby!) became available on FindMyPast. I of course made use of them! ;D

However, it seems I may have missed one or two entries! ::) My excuse is that the writing isn't always easy to read & is at times somewhat faded.

What I have is as follows:

Updated from my original post.

William & Jane (my 5x gt grandparents) had 8 children that I have found, all born/baptised in Whitby they being:

William Graham    born 8th Nov 1778    chr 13th Dec 1778    died by 1794
James Graham     born 25th May 1781  chr 25th May 1781    buried 28th May 1781
Jane Graham/Grayham    born 21st Aug 1784    chr 12 Sept 1784
James Graham/Grayham  born 28th Oct 1786    chr 19th Nov 1786
John Graham       born 19th July 1789  chr 24th July 1796
Margaret Graham  born 11th Sept 1791 chr 24th July 1796
William Graham    born 19th April 1794 chr 24th July 1796
Martha Graham    born 30th June 1796 chr 24th July 1796   died 1873

There appears to have been four James Graham's about in Whitby around the right time!

James Graham (Sailor) had these children:

William Graham bapt 14/01/1750 Married Jane Rowel in 1775 & a Flaxdresser by trade.
Thomas Graham bapt 22/01/1755/56 (aged 16 weeks old)
Alice Graham bapt 22/10/1768 (born 17th Aug 1768) To James & Eleanor. (Missed this one until today! ::)

That leads to this marriage:

James Graham to Eleanor Hill on 31st Oct 1743 at St Mary the Virgin in Whitby. Both of Whitby.

The above is my line.

There is also as follows:

Frances Grayham, baptized 05/10/1744 & James Graham baptized 31/03/1751 & buried 23/01/1753. Both children of James Graham, a Taylor.

James Graham, baptised 15/12/1765 (born 28/09/1765) Son of James Graham & John Graham baptised 18/10/1768 (born 14/10/1768) son of James & Elizabeth Graham. James a Carpenter on both.

John Graham baptised 15/10/1766 (born 14/07/1766) to James Graham a Weaver.

No wonder I've had trouble with this lot! ::)

As regards Jane Rowel, I did find a George & Ann Rowel in Whitby around the right time, but could only find a daughter Ann baptised to them on 24/06/1759, George a Roper. George was given as a Flaxdresser on his death in 1784 (buried 23/02/1784, aged 56 years.) His wife Ann died in 1774 (Buried 13/08/1774, aged 58 years.) I will however keep on file the Jane Rowel baptism in Alnwick that you found. If Martha can end up in Bedlington from Whitby then there is no reason why Jane couldn't have come from Alnwick to Whitby!.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

David,
Give me a couple of days, i have to read through about 2980 pages so that will take time. I have found some more Grahams and i have checked for the Rowel family in the Whitby area to no avail so looks like they moved in from somewhere else.

Hi David,
Regarding my research help, there is some interesting findings but i will start with George Rowel. The only George i could find born around 1728/29 was born in Stanhope Durham 14/01/1729. When i looked for Rowel in the Whitby area it only came up with George Rowel's marriage to Ann and their daughter Ann's baptism. It also came up with Jane Rowel who married William Graham. This leads me to believe that the Rowels came from the Durham region. There was plenty of reasons for people moving into the Whitby area at the time. Alum mining, ship building/trading and the fishing industry.

Other Graham family members i have found are as follows
Elizabeth Graham buried 23/01/1833
Richard Graham married a Jane Newton 02/08/1836
William Graham (Tailor) married a Hannah Nicholson 08/07/1833
Mary Graham daughter of William & Elizabeth Graham was baptised on 22/12/1835
Anderson Graham son of William & Elizabeth Graham was baptised on 25/05/1835
Elizabeth Graham daughter of William & Elizabeth Graham was baptised 28/02/1831
Mary Graham daughter of John & Mary Graham was baptised 24/09/1830
Mary Graham daughter of William & Elizabeth was baptised 27/04/1833
Robert Graham illegitimate son of Jane Graham was baptised 06/04/1833
William Graham illegitimate son of Jane Graham was baptised 20/02/1828

These were all i could find but if there is any specific research help you require some help with then please let me know. I will help the best i can.
Regards
Mike

Hi all,

I'm coming in several years late to this thread, but just to reiterate my post at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=639156.msg7168210#msg7168210

I am also the 4G-grandchild of Martha and Thomas Parker and must be your 5th cousin, David - very happy to meet you.
The short version is, Martha's father was James Graham and not William Graham.
