What Happened to Richard Oates?
« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 03:24 GMT (UK) »
Richard Stevens OATES married Susan POLLARD at Chacewater on 22 Dec 1872 (Cornwall OPC website).

It looks like she is listed as a widow at the 1881 Census at Gwennap (RG11/2328), with 4 children 8 and under. (The last, listed as WP Oates, was christened William Pollard OATES, which is a bit of a clincher).

However, I can't find a death for her husband Richard.  Can anyone else?

The place and date are right, but surely his wife wouldn't have allowed them to get that wrong.  Hope she had better luck with the stone mason! :)

Not sure that a widow with 4 children under 8 could have afforded a headstone (unless Richard was a landowner or something!)

Modified to add : - Ah, I see she is an annuitant in 1881, so maybe I misjudged her.
Have you looked for a Will for Richard - either as Oates or Stevens?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Can't see any Wills on the OPC Cornwall or Ancestry websites.  There are two trees on Ancestry in which he is mentioned but both have different, and wrong, spouses.

Found him!  Richard OATS aged 37 Sep Q 1881 Redruth.  Must think more laterally in future!

EDIT: although this would indicate he was still alive at census time on 3 April, when she's already a widow.  ???
