1828 Birth at Shambles Barracks - would it appear in local records?
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 00:11 GMT (UK) »
Evening,

Hoping for a steer in the right direction.  I am researching John Seath who was born in Galway in about 1828 from various census and an 1855 Scottish birth record for his son which gives parental birthplaces.

He appears on a number of ancestry public trees as being born 2/11/1828 Shambles Barracks.  What I want to find out is where his birth would have been recorded - in local parish records or in army records? I can't find this date in a primary resource.

John Seath was born to William Seath (of Fife, Scotland) and Mary Stevens(on) - not sure of her surname appears differently on different records.

Thanks

William Seath as a Chelsea Pensioner,
"Widow’s or children’s pension records often include marriage or baptismal certificates in support of the claim for assistance."
So you could order his records and see if there is any information contained about John Seath

1841 census
William 44 Day Labourer born Fife
Margaret 40 born Fife
John 12 Shoemakers apprentice, born Ireland
Janet 5 born Outside Census County (1841)
William 2 months, born Fife

1851 census
William 53,    Pensioner (Army) And Ag Lab, born Fife, Abdie
Margaret 52, born Fife, Kettle
John 22, Shoemaker (Journeyman), born Ireland
Janet 15, App Hand Loom Linen Weaver, born Stirling, Stirlingshire
William 10, born Fife, Kettle
James 8, born Fife, Kettle
Mary McDonald 16, App Hand Loom Linen Weaver, born Fife, Kennoway

((So William Seath married twice? John and Janet being Mary Stevenson's children? So you could narrow down her death date 1836 - 1842 and possibly she died in Stirlingshire or Fifeshire? Just a guess))

There's an 1828 baptism at Kettle: John Seath son of Wm and Margt produces 1 hit on Scotland's People. Might be worth investigating further.

William's army discharge papers are viewable on FindMyPast. Nothing there about family as far as I can see.

I have certainly seen plenty of baptisms for children of soldiers stationed locally, in parish records in Ireland, especially in Church of Ireland records. You don’t say what denomination your family were. (If John was born in Scotland then he may have been Presbyterian, rather than Church of Ireland. There is/was a Presbyterian church in Galway but I do not know if its records have survived). Might be worth checking the local COI records anyway.

Evening All,

Thanks for your help.

All the bits and bobs I have on him are below..

Whiteout: I hadn't thought of any pensioner records recording any family.

ShaunJ: Well found!!!! I must have searched as parent name: Will* and missed this one as it is "Wm" so hadn't found it.  It's a blimmin puzzler and a half.  This record is the source of the date...

John son of William Seath 64 Regiment and Marg't McDonald his wife, born in Galway, Ireland, Nov 2nd 1828.

I have a record of William and Margaret's marriage on 30 Jul 1838.  So now it is all the more important to me to find a Galway record to see if the parent is Mary Stevens(on) or Margaret McDonald.  As I have contradictory info on who is mother is now  ;D

Just checking my records Whiteout, I have Janet's baptism for 1836 in Kettle and it states born in Stirling Castle but to Margaret McDonald. Again this is before the recorded marriage of William and Margaret.

I'm beginning to suspect there is a distinct lack of a Mary Stevens(on) anywhere at any time!!!

Not sure how I check CoI or and Presbyterian churth records from Galway.  EDIT: I've tried rootsireland - nothing
