Mary Welsh married Robert Ingleton at Goulburn
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 07:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for some assistance with the following family as I have another relative who left Scotland for Australia!

I am attempting to find the time/ship of departure for Mary Welsh, her arrival in Australia and subsequent life in Australia (nothing like being ambitious).

To date I have this information:
Mary Welsh born: 1854 Greenock Scotland. She last appears in the Scotland census in 1871 living with her parents John Welsh and Janet Welsh (MS Smith Laird).
I have found a reference to Mary's marriage to Robert Ingleton in the Greenock Telegraph (thanks to the Wyatt Library Intimations - a fantastic resource).  This occurred in Oct 4 1878 at Horbet Cottage, Goulburn NSW.  Ancestry.com have Mary's name down as Mary S Welsh, but I am thinking the S is an error for L (Laird) as the remaining details seem to tie together.

So Mary would have arrived in Australia sometime between 1871 and 1878 but I have not found any shipping records for her.

Trolling through Familysearch and NSW BDM I have come to the conclusion that they had the following children:
John born 1880
Janet born Aug 1881
 and Robert born 1886.

I am thinking that Mary may have died in 1889 (Leichhart) but can find no cemetery record for her.  There appears to be a number of Ingleton's in the Goulburn area, however I cannot connect them together.  There is a reference to  Mrs Robert Ingleton in the Goulburn evening Penny Post in 1894 (regarding her witnessing the death of a wee 3yr old who was kicked in the head by a roaming horse), however this would then dispute the date of death that I am considering through NSW BDM.
I have not been able to find Robert in the Sands directory and the census records are non-existent from what I can make out.

Any idea would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time.
Regards
Blacksmithy

I think the 1889 death could be correct and then Robert (given he had a young family) remarried:

Possibly:
4089/1891 / INGLETON ROBERT / SMITH MARGARET / GOULBURN

So she would be the Mrs Robert Ingleton and widow referred to in the newspapers...

Her death notice seems to confirm:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/cite/1111823/17230250
Burial at Woronora...with Robert http://www.woronoracemetery.org.au/finding-loved-ones

Matches this death reg:
22622/1935 INGLETON MARGARET / JOHN / 83 YRS CRONULLA / SUTHERLAND

Mary's death in Leichardt matches the birth reg district of youngest child:
14335/1880 INGLETON JOHN / ROBERT / MARY LAIRD / GOULBURN
9898/1881 INGLETON JEANNETT / ROBERT / MARY L / GOULBURN
4992/1886 INGLETON ROBERT / ROBERT / MARY L / LEICHHARDT

Baby Robert's death:
5831/1887 INGLETON ROBERT / ROBERT / MARY / GOULBURN

This could be the death of Jack (son John?)
21071/1958 INGLETON JACK / ROBERT / MARGARET / ROCKDALE

Possibly his marriage, and wife's birth and death
13538/1914 INGLETON JOHN / MACREADY ISABELLA A / SYDNEY
6764/1883 MACREADY ISABELLA A / HUGH / MARY / NEWTOWN
28603/1967 INGLETON ISABELLE AGNES / HUGH / MARGARET / KOGARAH

Isabella's mother's maiden name was McARTHUR. These are likely to be WWII enlistments of two sons of theirs:
INGLETON ROBERT MCARTHUR : Service Number - NX8270 : Date of birth - 22 Dec 1919 : Place of birth - ROCKDALE NSW : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - INGLETON JOHN
INGLETON COLIN MCARTHUR : Service Number - NX57056 : Date of birth - 08 Jan 1920* : Place of birth - ROCKDALE NSW : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - INGLETON JOHN
*I think this should be 1922!

Both married (see link below); both died in 1972, see http://ryersonindex.net/search.php

Hi all
thank you for your thoughts. I have am now able to fit the first 3 replies into the picture although now have to revise the probability that Mary died much later than my first thought of 1889, however have yet to find this.
The last post for a Mary Ingleton death aged 65 does not look like my Mary as the date of birth does not add up nor do the parents.  But perhaps it is a wider family member so will keep the options open.

Still looking
