Kilmovee Cemeteries County Mayo (Flatley)
« on: Tuesday 09 December 14 16:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out how many cemeteries there are around Kilmovee?  I am not sure how/where I can find this information.  I have already approached several on line sites and so far I have not had any replies.
I am searching for a particular grave (Thomas Flatley) and I do have a photograph which was taken in 2000.  I have attached the photo to this posting. Unfortunately the relative who took the photograph has passed away.  The only information I have is that the cemetery is in the Kilmovee area.
Kind Regards
Karmnet

"Church of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic Church in the Townland of Kilmovee"
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlmayo2/kilmovee_mayo_church_immac_conception.html

However, if you google "rc church near Kilmovee, Mayo, Ireland" then go into map view it doesn't seem to be shown. I did find the church (with parochial house behind) but satelitte view shows no sign of a graveyard here so suspect you really need someone with local knowledge.

If all else fails, wonder if the Parish Priest could help to identify the graveyard from the photo?

The parish newsletter refers to 4 cemeteries in the parish. As Aghadowey suggests, perhaps an email to the parish would help - address is on the newsletter.

 Hi

Google search Kilmovee Co Mayo, there is a community site with several contact points including a heritage centre. Might be useful to include the inscription from the gravestone when you post the information for help, does the stone indicate a Townland, I cant make out after Thomas Flatley name.

Thank you all for replying to my post.  I shall follow up on your information, leads and advice.

Hello Karmnet,

The backdrop from the photograph bears little resemblance to the Urlaur, St Patrick, or Naomh Mohbi cemeteries, which would suggest the Culmore location or the old St Celsus graveyard. If you contact Fr Vincent he should have a clearer picture.
Your people (Flatley) were from Sinolaune and custom was up to the 1970's that those east of the old Cloonamna School would receive the sacraments at the Church of the Immaculate Conception or the old church in Ballyglass and be buried in St Patrick or Naomh Mobhi depending on the time frame you are referring to. Those west of the school would use the Glan church's and be buried in Kilkellly or the newer Culmore location.
