Did rope makers live on ship?

I wouldn't have thought so - I have always assumed it was a land based job but it seemed to be the only explanation for his absence.

If he was the John in the asylum -Diana's birth was registered September qtr 1852 so her conception was around late 1851/early 1852. He couldn't have been in the asylum at that time so where was he in 1851?

(Assuming Diana was his child??)

That is the question. I'd almost have to go with on board a ship somewhere. I did find a "not on ship" census record in the 1871 census (these were sailors not on their ships but not with families), haven't seen any kind of ship censuses for 1851.

I wonder if it was this asylum as the second link mentions St Petroc

The record I have from FreeReg online say Asylum (of Mevagissey)

I found this at Familysearch.org for 1851. Doesn't have an image so I can't tell what the occupation is or who he's living with.

Name:    John Robins
Age:    40
Gender:    Male
Birthplace:    Mevagissey
Relationship to Head of Household:    Visitor
Schedule Type:    Household

Does it give his relationship to William? This might help in identifying him as the son of William Robins and Mary Mitchell bap 1 July 1810 Mevagissey if William is his brother. Ones step closer to proving John Robins bp 1 July 1810 is the husband of Diana Philip and father of Mary Robins Roberts.

As stated in your reply - he was a visitor but what I forgot to say in my previous reply was that he was shown as married

I also found a William Robins bp 1800 son of William Robins and Mary.

In the 1841 census where John is listed with Diana, William and Mary are living 3 houses down and William is also a rope maker.

I think we can safely say John Robins married to Diana Philip is the same John Robins bp 1 July 1810 son of William Robins and Mary Mitchell.

Thanks for the help.

Now if I could just get my Albert Hunkin/Albert Hunkin Roberts (son of Mary Robins Roberts) sorted for sure I'd have it made.
