"Stratford" family. Cavan.Co.Cavan.Ireland.
« on: Friday 12 December 14 13:07 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone would have any current or past information about the "STRATFORD" family or their relatives, who were farmers from Cavan. My Grandmother, on my Mothers side was Thomasena Stratford. She was born in Dublin in 1884, daughter of Thomas Stratford and Jane Kilroy and she  lived in Dublin with her brothers and sisters before moving to Cavan.(Thomas's parents were Mark Stratford of Cullaboy in the Parish of Drumlumin, Cavan  and Martha Anne Ferguson from Mayheahy in the Parish of Soraby, Cavan.Mark and Martha married 1847 at Granard Register Office, Co.Longford). The 1901 census shows the Stratford family lived in Dublin, and 1911 census in Drumgore, Loughdawan. Cavan. My Grandmother Thomasena Stratford married at Gowna Parish Church in 1918. Her 2 brothers were Mark and Thomas(Tom) Stratford and sisters were Cheri,Julia and Katherine Jane(Edie)Stratford. Younger brother,Thomas(Tom)was a Farmer and had a farm near Kilmore, Cavan Town in the 1940's/50's up till his death early 1960s, when he had an accident visiting his brother in Downpatrick. My Mother, Ethel Owens lived with him on his farm for abt 10 years before 1951.She mentioned the "SLOAN" and "KNIGHT"families as being special friends who were related distantly to the Stratford family and I would be very keen to hear from anybody who has any information at all about the Stratford,Sloane, Knight families.  With many thanks for your help, Carole.

Lots of information there but thought I would fill in a few details for anyone reading this topic. However, are you sure about which Mark Stratford is your ancestor?

This could be the Knight connection-

Joseph Knight, son of Joseph, married 21 June 1848 Judith Stratford, daughter of Mark.

Possibly Judith?
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Kilgolagh/Cullaboy_Upper/1050532
and same family in 1911-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Kilgolagh/Cullaboy__Upper/347917/
This family in 1821 census are likely connected as well-

Added-
Joseph Knight died 1864-

Judith Knight died 1904-

Many thanks for all the links. My ancestor was the Mark Stratford from the Parish of Drumlumun, Cullaboy, b 1829 who married Martha Anne Ferguson, a Farmers daughter. Marks Father was William Stratford, born abt 1779 who also had a brother called Mark Stratford.Their Parents and Grandparents  were called Thomas and William Stratford. Thomas I think, died in Freeduff and William in Carrick.Their family originally came from Warwickshire, (Nuneaton) it was abt 1700 that the 2 brothers William and Thomas Stratford came over to Ireland from Warwickshire. The Stratford family have some notable descendents.

Thanks, have found out which Mark Stratford was my ancestor and the father of my Great Grandfather,Thomas Stratford. He was Mark Stratford who married Thomasina Ferguson on 11 February 1848.
Mark was a farmer of Kilalegh, his father was also called Mark Stratford (a farmer).
Thomasina Ferguson was the daughter of Thomas Ferguson (a farmer).
(They married at the Parish Church, Ballymickillery)
Thomasina Ferguson was born in  Malyheahy. Co.Cavan in 1826.  Thomasina's father was Thomas Ferguson, b.1795 Lisnalee. Monaghan.  Her mother was Mary Anne Knight b.1800-1830.
Thomasina had 4 sisters called Catherine Ferguson, Martha Anne Ferguson, Cherry Ann Ferguson and Mary Ann Ferguson.
Mark Stratford (who married Thomasina Ferguson) was born abt 1801-1869.  His father was Mark Stratford b 1778 and his mother was Judith, she died 1844.  He had 2 sisters and 4 brothers. They were called Mary Stratford. Robert Stratford. Andy Stratford. Thomas Stratford. b.1806-1867 (who married Thomasina Fergusons sister, Mary Ann Ferguson). Judith Stratford. and Sidney Stratford.
I would be very grateful for any other information about the STRATFORD, FERGUSON, SLOAN and KNIGHT families to continue with my family history  as they are interlinked through marriage.
Many thanks for your help, Carole.

and a sibling of Mark whose  father was Mark Stratford b 1778, so father was  c.28 years old when Thomas was born!

Perfectly plausible!!
