I believe that is James William.

I always assumed that she was James and Emma's daughter, for two reasons: (1) the same Christian name, and (2) her DOB, which was when Emma was still alive.

There are births for Alice Maud Mardell March 1876 and Alice Mardell September 1876.
I haven't checked for them in a census though.

Ah, if she died in 1862, then clearly not Emma's daughter. Mind you, my Great Grandfather didn't waste much time, considering that Emma only died in March 1861!

Interesting, as I have Alice marrying William Prior in 1898 and dying in 1849 in Edmonton. I might of course have the wrong Alice.

Moreover, James Gilbert died in December 1873! So who is the father. I am not aware of Harriet re-marrying!

Yours may be the other one born September quarter.

Alice Gilbert (transcribed as Silbert) aged 15 is living with her sister Emma Reed in 1891, so it can't be the Alice Maud who died in 1886.

There is a marriage for James Gilbert to Mary Elizabeth Llewellin or Eleanor Ann Morgan in Edmonton, 1893.

1911 indexes show a possible James, born Tottenham.

She is probably the other Alice then. A birth certificate would be useful.
