Jane who married Jesse Dale
« on: Saturday 13 December 14 09:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have a mystery Jane as my 3rd great grandmother. She was born around 1802 in County Carlow, and married an older English soldier, Jesse Dale from Framfield, Sussex, around or before 1822, when a daughter Sarah was born. Later they were in Guernsey where a further 2 children, Ellinor and Anna, were born and then back to Framfield, Sussex where 5 more children were born including my 2x great grandmother Jane in 1840 (she had a twin brother, James). The 1851 census is hard to read, but it looks like her birthplace is something like Lachlan /illegible/ Carlo. The 1871 census just states Carlow. All other censuses just state Ireland. She died some time after the 1881 census.
I would love to be able to find her maiden name and when exactly she married, but am having great trouble finding anything at all, so if anyone is able to lend a helping hand it would be much appreciated.

Birth certificates for any children born after the start of civil registration there should list their mother's maiden name.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi 1851 census has Jane as widowed 49 yes hard to read her birthplace.
I've sent an error into Anc for birthplace of Ellen as Guernsey.
Benj 16 James & Ellen all born in county.
Free BMD have both their births in Uckfield june qtr 1840 vol 7 page 417.
I hope this helps if you apply for a birth cert from GRO Southport.
Good luck

Could the birthplace be Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow.

Leighlin is pronounced rather like "Lachlan"

Hi, I found something that may help. In St. Mary's Church [Church of Ireland] in Carlow town the marriage register for 1821 shows a marriage between Jesse Dale and Jane Fleming. Also, listed are the following;

Births:

William 1747
Sarah 1749
Henry 1752
Christiana  1807
John 1809
John 1809
 John 1817

Deaths:
William 1749
Richard 1756
William 1757
Anne 1802

It appears that Jesse may have had family from Carlow Town. On irishgenealogy.ie there are some records of Dales and Flemings which may be helpful. An old will exists for an Elizabeth Dalee dated 1754 location:Carlow which may have family info in it.
Lastly, Where brides normally marry in their own parih, I had a look about and found this marriage  which may be the marriage of Jane Fleming's parents:

Marriage:
James Flemming
Nancy Connor
married: 25 November 1773
in the Cathedral of Assumption, Carlow Town

witnesses:Maurice Connor
Leighlin Farrell
Edward Flemming

I hope this helps,  Kim

P.S.. I think Lochlan, county Carlow is actually Old Leighlin which around this time has many Protestant/formerly Protestant families.

Thanks Kim - this looks very interesting :)
I have ordered the birth certificate of Jane's daughter, Jane, born in Sussex 1840, which I hope will show Jane Snr's maiden name. Fingers crossed...

Are you able to provide a link to the parish register? I can not seem to locate one online...

"Lachlan/illegible/Carlo"   Is the word after "Lachlan" illegible?
