No John Butterton baptisms in Ruabon but a few John Edwards (as you'd expect!) around 1808-ish. Will need to check for a Butterton connection.

He was really a John Edwards, Roger - see last few posts.

WR - I'm busy tomorrow but will try to investigate in my offline records - I don't always trust the online ones  :-X

Many thanks to Gadget and Roger for your replies. Its becoming apparent that John may have been born Edwards and then changing name for some reason to Butterton c 1840.the plot thickens!

Not found anything significant so far, WR. No wills either.

It's at times like this that we need that 1841  :(

Found a couple of witness signatures of a John Butterton in the 1802-1812 Ruabon marriage transcripts. It looks as if he might have been a church warden as no obvious relation to the couple.  Also a John Butterton marrying in 1760 - lots of others. I'll need to go through more of  my booklets.

Outside possibility for parents given JB's occupation in 1851 census, but no Edwards connection?

Many thanks, once again to Gadget and Roger. Its perhaps the wrong time of year really for one of these searches with being busy getting ready for Christmas.lolYes Gadget the missing 1841 would provide a lot of clues!

Nearest John Butterton bpt in Ruabon is in 1800* - parents Thomas and Susanna. Also a burial in Ruabon 27 Feb 1841 of a Thomas Butterton, aged 74, of Wrexham - maybe worth looking in to.

Busy..................

* there was an age diff between John and Elizabeth - maybe he made himself younger - just a possibility.
