Cordwallis Street, Maidenhead
« on: Monday 15 December 14 16:02 GMT (UK) »
Was Cordwallis Street always a business zone or were there houses that were demolished ?  I had family who lived there according to the Census' and was wondering if today's Cordwallis Road, was once called Cordwallis Street, and the name altered when businesses were developed there.

Hi Pepcigirl,

Welcome to RootsChat.

Cornwallis Road and Cornwallis Street are both still on the map.

Cordwallis Road was developed first - by 1875 - although the buildings were only on the southern side.  The houses on the northern side were there by mid 1890s.  These houses were specifically for the working men and their families.

The houses in Cordwallis Street were there by 1910 or so.  I'm not sure exactly when it all changed, probably after WWII.  As you say, now it is an area of small businesses.

There were some buildings marked as 'motor works' to the north of Cordwallis Road as long ago as 1920s.
