Female mystery writer "Mary Darling"?
« on: Monday 15 December 14 23:42 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather, Charles Darling Morrison was born in Peterhead 1899 and died in Toronto, Canada in 1973.  I have been tracing my family tree (with lots of friendly help from a Morrison cousin) and have not found ANY Darlings at all.  There aren't any Darlings on my cousin's tree either.  I was told that the name Darling came from a Morrison cousin named Mary Darling who was a mystery writer in Scotland.  I cannot find any proof of this at all and was wondering if anybody out there could shed some light on this for me?  Thanks again in advance!

There is a writer by the name of Mary Darling and she is contemporary and very much alive, plus the late Grace Darling of Northumberland, lifeboat fame, and that is all the Darlings I know.

Barry,

I doubt this would be the same person as she would be at least 115yrs old (although not impossible) ???  :)

Kim,

There are 3 marriages on SP from 1855 - 1899 for surname Morrison (with variants) & female surname Darling.

Do you know where Charles Darling Morrison's parents originate from?

The reason I ask is that there is a Mary Darling born c1873 in Lanarkshire, Scotland (http://familytree.iannelson.uk/ind1602.html) & a marriage in 1903 for a Mary Darling marrying a male Morrison although I didn't check which area but worth checking out  :)

Charles Darling Morrison's father John Thomson Morrison was born in Old Deer in 1870 and his mother Mary Strachan was born in Peterhead in 1867.
Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it.

Kim,

I'm trying to establish a possible link in the distance between Aberdeen & Lanarkshire if this is the correct Mary.

What was the occupation of Charles Darling Morrison's father?

Did he move around a lot, did any of his siblings/family move to Lanarkshire???

Kim, I don't expect you to answer these questions but to try & find out through records if there is a connection.

William Charles Darling was born in Longside (not far from Peterhead) 15-6-1869, to parents who had come from England. The 1871 and 1881 censuses show him in Longside with his parents. The 1891 census shows his as a joiner boarding in Queen Street, Peterhead. The 1901 census shows him married, a restaurateur, living at 12 Back Street, Peterhead.

This is the only local "Charles" Darling.

Thank you so much everyone for your help, I really appreciate it.  I definitely have a lot to follow up on now.  Hopefully there is a connection there (and I can find it!).
